No a refractometer does not measure sugar it measures total dissolved solids TDS. Whatever is inherent in a product is what is measured. If grapes for instance which naturally contains glucose minerals proteins etc the refractometer will measure the amount. With a little experience one can become quite adept at knowing exactly what one is purchasing or growing.

Its a poor worker who blames the tool!
