I am not sure about cats and garlic - dogs can get garlic and brewers yeast to help keep the ticks and fleas away, among other pests...

We have a pretty big tick issue here where I live and I am only pulling one or two off of the dog in a week. None seem to be "sucking".

Food\feed grade diatomaceous earth can be used\dusted on their coats too... it can also go in their feed.

This will eliminate gut and intestinal parasites and minimize flies around your house.

There are cheaper places to purchase I believe, however this site has amounts listed to feed animals.
