Colon Impaction of Octogenarian with malnutrition and dehydration
On September 21 st, my mother went into a Hospital in Florida. I was with her at the hospital from September 22 to October 2nd when she was released. I just returned on Monday, October 13th after training her care taker and hiring a replacement.
I slept at her bedside at the hospital and monitored whatever she was given. She developed an ulcerated bed sore for which the wound management people could not find a viable approach. I used BF & C developed by Dr. Shultze's teacher Dr. Christopher. It was so much better than what the nurses were using that the Dr. wrote an order allowing me to apply the BF & C to my mother's wound. A PEG feeding tube was inserted into her stomach.
Incidentally, I found that the use of Cardizone created terrible effects on her and was able to persuade the cardiologist to stop it. It appeated to me that the justification for using it, rapid high beat, had been contrived. We're now monitoring my mother's vital signs three times a day and her heart beat doesn't go over ninety. After the visiting nurse came, who had been a Dr. in Peru, she only suggested adding Gatorade to mother's regime because she's anemic.
I brought her home with the help of a student who was completing a three month course in health care and for more than a week, I either provided 24 hour a day care for my mother or trained the young man to do so.
As my mother had an impacted bowel, our worse problem came about when it blocked up. We used four saline solution Fleet enemas and magnesium citrate to relieve the blockage as directed by the gastroenterologist. As it was clear that the gastroenterologist had no suggestions on getting mother's colon to work properly. I started Mother on Dr. Shultze's Intestinal Formula # 1. I started at 1/2 a capsule, then a capsule, and as of today, mother is being given seven (7) capsules a day through her feeding tube. The capsules are opened and mixed with water.
Our objective is to keep her from impacting. She has started to move her bowels to the consistency of pudding. When we initially unblocked the impaction at home, we were able to get solid stool from her. Unless someone can suggest another protocol, we'll keep adding one capsule a day until she passes solid stool.
She is being fed the juice of fresh fruit in the morning, freshly squeezed vegetable juice at lunch and freshly squeezed fruit juice at night. Also, she's being given Dr. Shultze's Echinacea Plus which has resulted in her hands and feet feeling warm to the touch for the first time in years.
She's also on a high carbohydrate high protein drink which has 800 calories in 12
oz. If anyone can suggest a better drink, please, let me know.
We're increasing to 1,000 calories in 15
oz. and working toward feeding her that twice a day. Any suggestions that will help to improve her quality of life will be appreciated. She is also being taken our for about an hour a day. Otherwise, because she is still recovering from the bed sore and pharmaceuticals, she sleeps a lot. She also eats by mouth and has portions of sandwiches, Zuchnni and Tomato soup and ice cream.
If anyone has experience with patients having bowel impactions and being fed through a tube. Please, let me know of your experience. I'm most grateful to at least have a chance to regulating her bowels with Intestinal Formula # 1 rather than waiting for them to impact and then using enemas.
