I'm gay, and hope to be a parent some day, and will probably adopt a child. The gender of a parent isn't the issue, it's how fit a person is to care for a child and give them the love they need. Example, would you rather give your child to a heterosexual couple where the father is an abusive alcoholic, or two same-sex partners who have a strong and committed relationship, and do not use drugs or alcohol? Just because a person is gay doesn't make them an unfit parent, given the number of children that need homes I don't think giving that child to a gay couple who wants one is something that should be discouraged.
