I can understand their reasoning and it could have resulted due to complaints of people who have to share their paid for seat with someone who can't fit in one seat.

You all have missed the reason for charging heavier people more. It is just the relationship of weight to fuel consumption.

The airlines don't give a rats ass about your comfort. The planes with 5 half sized seats suitable for a group of elves in the middle of the cabin proves this point.
