Re: my guess is that you haven't looked too deeply into the free money for poor and middle class college students.
Well, I know that in my state, students who have a certain level of good grades... Bs will do.. can get free tuition at state schools, as well as a book allotment. That may not cover all costs, such as living costs and eating, but it's pretty close to free! No income requirements there, you just have to have the grades and get into a state school.
And then of course, with FAFSA if you have a low enough income you can get certain kinds of loans that others can't get! Of course you'll have to repay those when you graduate, but by then you should be able to get a job thanks to your education.
I don't know much about grants so I won't speak about those.
But the other aspect is tax credits... when you make over a certain amount (and it's not that high), you don't get to claim those tax credits for tuition you paid for your child.
So yeah... a lot of breaks out there available to students with limited resources...
