Hi, I had two homebirths with a midwife who caught the baby, my husband could have easily caught the baby however I wanted the pereneal support that skilled midwives offer. So anyway, I labored the whole time without any help from the midwife who was only there in case of emergency and who only stepped in when the baby was crowning. I can see the allure of unassisted childbirth, but that is for a probably couple who has done it a few times and probably who are not attempting their first V-BAC (vaginal birth after delivery). It is nice to have the back up of a midwife at home even if you don't need her at all, it is comforting to know she is there.
