Probably not and here's why..


There was a story about work at Duke University that got some press a few months ago about being able to "activate" the virus and a so-called "science writer" got all excited and extrapolated that if the virus "came out of hiding" then you could just whack it with acyclovir or one of the other antiviral drugs. The folks who jumped to conclusions don't understand how the virus or the antivirals work.

When the dormant virus is "activated", the dormant original copy replicates inside the cell, but it doesn't "come out of hiding" so that original copy of the virus is still there in the cell. The antiviral drugs act to interfere with the replication process inside the cell. They don't kill the replicated virus copies. So much for that theory.
