kombucha - need help!!!

I am a first time kombucha brewer in need of a little help. I acquired a culture about six weeks ago and prepared it in the normal fashion. The culture reproduced, with a new one forming on top and the original kind of hanging. We were under the impression that we had to wait until the original culture dropped to the bottom until we could remove them and start new brews. It has been six weeks and they are still joined. I will not attempt to drink the tea, as it has been so long, but I would like to know what to do from here. The new culture is quite thick and has grown very large. The original culture is still hanging in there. I am ready to start over and do this right. Peace!
