You are taking oil enemas which are usually small volume, usually 8 oz or less, enemas with a long retention. What bcbutler is talking about are coffee enemas which are water based coffee solution and usually in larger volume. The oil enema can be taken in any position that the longest retention. I have been given medicinal oil enemas laying in bed to be retained for the whole night.

As for dying from taking enemas I have read only of two cases, where both patients took something like 10 large cleansing enemas during an 8 hour period. This caused an electrolyte in-balance that caused the death.
