Re: MadArtist, my mom says VINEGAR!
Fledgling,
Thank you for sharing your findings, I just might give vinegar a try - the only thing I am afraid of is affecting my japanese cherry trees which are being surrounded by the bamboo.
Yes, I have heard of letting the land rest and regenerate, as well as rotating crops being what the land needs. For example for coffee the land is to be used for two or three years I believe, then a diffrent (particular) crop planted to revitalize the ground for one or two years.
I was quite young (a child) when my father would share these knowledge bits and thus - sadly - I don't rememeber them completely.
I heard recently that legumes put nitrogen into the soil, and other plants offer coverage, as in mulch - to keep the ground moist, while other yet provide height for some shade and a perch to climb for beans and other climbers.
Really it is all a beautiful concert of nature and whatever we can glean about its workings would be the best that we could do for our gardens, what better teacher than mother nature herself.
I had posted this for you, wonder if you had a chance to read it, it gives some insight into soil microorganisms and gardening:

I really do thank you and you dear mom for your input, I might just cut the bamboo shoots and fill the stumps with vinegar!!!
Will post updates...
