Are you from Texas by any chance? I think "the crud" is what they call the flu there?

If you are painting 5% Lugol's just remember that one "vertical" drop of Lugol's is 6.5 milligrams (or so) of iodine. You want to keep your applications to 100 mg or less for as long as 3 weeks and then drop down to no more than 12.5 mg/day from what I have read. You might want to measure your drops for this.

I have heard that some people make a salve by mixing Lugol's and Vaseline and apply it that way. Others mix it with castor oil. Maybe one of these methods would work for you, then again maybe painting it the way you are doing is the best.
