I think I agree with V, except that I would say it a slightly different way;

IMO the self-disciplined mind learns by
introspection + observation + experience,
and makes/extrapolates/enacts choices about their future.

IMO an undisciplined mind is indeed at the mercy of its past and present surroundings. Far more controllable by outside parties, too..
