The reason I love Johnny Rivers so much is that his music to me is fun music, uplifting and healing to me. Just pure childlike fun.
As I was growing up I listened to a lot of rock'n roll, to groups like THE BAND, DOOBIE BROTHERS; AND EARLY CHICAGO, and CREEDENCE CLEARWATER. Later on in life I became a solo musician and fell in love with folk type acoustic/coffee house music. In particular I was a fan of Nancy Griffith and Eric Taylor. Eric is one of the best songwriters and guitar pickers in the country. However, due to my overall health issues I had depression, and after thirty years of folk I realized that a lot of the folk music I was listening to was kind of depressing, and one day I got a hold of some Johnny Rivers music again along with other rock'n roll and realized it was pretty uplifting. . I listened to it all of the time and realized that even though I like acoustic music, the old time rock'n roll and simplistic lyrics of Johnny Rivers was more healing and full of light and fun, so his music I listened to daily, sharing it with the lady I was dating at the time, and it became a special bond between us.
As to your question as to what is going on with Johnny Rivers these days, I believe he is 61 years old now, still going strong, but on his website only two places in the country were listed that he was going to perform this year, AND DIDN'T YOU KNOW IT, ONE PLACE WAS AT THE STAFFORD CENTER FIFTEEN MINUTES FROM WHERE I LIVE!!! SO I GOT FRONT ROW TICKETS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE, AND THE CONCERT WAS FANTASTIC!! OF COURSE WHEN HE PLAYED SECRET AGENT MAN IT BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN. I got to meet him after the concert and get a cd and poster signed. LATER ON THAT NIGHT GOING HOME FROM THE CONCERT ME AND MY LADY SAW A METEORITE slowly DISINTEGRATE AS IT CAME into the earth. So it was a great night and ever since I really love that song even more. I could share more about the special symbolism of the song, for it was a special song for my sister's boyfriend who has now passed over into spirit (and without me knowing that I sent my sister a link from you tube with Johnny playing secret agent man to cheer her up, only to find out that her boyfriend used to pretend he was playing the guitar and singing that song), and it also turned out it was my also the favorite song of the favorite uncle (who tragically died in a motorcycle accident when he was in his twenties--he survived Vietnam only to die in a motorcycle accident) of my girlfriend (at the time who went to see Johnny with me).
Last time I looked on the calendar, I think that Johnny is playing in Arnold Missouri which is a suburb of St. Louis Missouri. Here are his links just for kicks. And by the way, my favorite all time record Of Johnny is titled REALIZATION; several Jimmy Hendricks songs were on that record and Hendrix played the guitar on several of the songs. This was Johnny's major attempt at a deeply spiritual album with songs like LOOK TO YOUR SOUL, AND BROTHER WHERE ARE YOU. IT'S A GREAT ALBUM completely different from any of Johnny's other albums, and the cover is so cool, Johnny with a cool beatnik type beard and dressed in violet and purple with lots of jewelry. Very cool and sixtyish. OH and by the way, Johnny hardly wrote any of his songs. He did not write Secret Agent Man, but he sure knew how to play it and make that song internationally famous. They just won't let that song die, it has resurrected itself on the credit card commercial you might have seen on tv.
