Re: cortisol/prednisone

Cortisol is available in 5,10, or 20 mg tablets by the name of Cortef from Upjohn or as 10 and 20 mg tablets from Merck. I don't like pharmaceuticals but temporal arteritis is a medical emergency, risk of stroke and blindness are so high. My mother could not make her words make sense though she knew what she wanted to say when it happened. That went away and was not noticeable in tests as a stroke.

I just wish I had known about natural (I mean the molecule is identical) cortisol back then. If you get a chance reread the book. As much as you know and treat adrenal exhaustion and fatigue you would proably find it interesting.

The dosing is completely different. My mother lived for 8 years after that and though the prednisone, which began upwards of 40mgs.(maybe much higher for a short time) was taken down to 7.5 and tried at 5 and 2. Because of the changing stresses and needs of the body it was impossible to keep it level. On her own she would try to get off and would bottom out and almost killed herself several times. I remember talking to her in the ambulance more than once when she had no palpable pulse or measureable BP. She was quite a fighter. I wish I could have done better for her. Her last years were miserable as the prednisone aged every organ causing numerous problems and wasting of all of her muscles including her heart and heart valves. So, I agree, avoid prednisone if at all possible. Cortisol from my understanding wouldn't have done these awful things to her.

Maybe her story will help someone else insist on cortisol and not accept prednisone. I hope so.

Thank you for your answer.
