Probitics dont die at room temp. They thrive at body temp. The reduced storage Temperature is to keep OTHER cultures from growing on the growth medium and keep the sample pure. Probiotics or most bacteria or Fungi do not die at room temperature. That is riduculous. Life thrives at room temp. and above.

edit maybe delicate enzymes could be an exception. And other delicate molecules. I was thinking like bacteria and yeast cells.
