I wholeheartedly agree. Down here, if your property becomes surrounded by homes in a homeowners association, you are automatically under their aegis. And they can put you in jail, if you do not comply.
Where I lived in Portland Or. it was even worse, the entire city of Portland is divided into small urban areas, with each property included in the homeowners association, without exception. The association as the power to declare a house a neighborhood nuisance, stamp it as a drug house, and city code is then called in to crawl all over it to essentially harass the owner into selling or moving.
I do recall the Nazi's using similar tactics. Just think how handy these associations will be later on down the road.
