Flaxseeds, cooked or raw?


I just read an article saying the only way to safely have flax is in the ground seed form not the oil. It also went to to say the raw seed has a toxin and to bake it into muffins etc. Now I am really confused. I would think heating it would kill the good properties but now raw is toxic?
Help me understand how to take my flax.
