Shingles in a child

My son, who is 13, was diagnosed with Shingles today. The doctor said that in a child the pain doesn't get severe and it usually doesn't spread too far and goes away within a couple of weeks. That being said, I don't want him to suffer from the pain he is already having or give it time to get worse. He said it's been hurting for three days now, and he only just told me because it got so bad. He had thought it was just muscle pain and didn't know he had the rash on his back. Does anyone know of treatment I can give him, keeping in mind that he's young, on certain medications, and very picky and to what goes into his mouth (herbs)? My friend is big time into homeopathic remedies and swears vitmin E will help, but I can't find that in any research other than for chicken pox. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
