Asymmetry Is Beauty

I used to live with my girlfriend in the fourth floor of an old storefront in Madison, Indiana. It was a really dream-like flat that overlooked the main street of an old river town.

At night there were street lamps that lit up everything and there was an old theater across the street from our apartment that used to play old 45's that you could hear from the whole town.

A few times when I would be up at night, I would look out of our big story windows onto main street and see one lone person walking through town. He was a young guy, and I could tell his body was deformed in some way. His left arm was short and mangled. His left leg was contorted so that he could barely walk.

Night after night I would see him walking through town...just taking it in...and stopping to look into storefronts. He was happy. It was then that I started to realize that he was walking at night for a reason. He was walking at night to avoid the eyes...to avoid the glares.

It was then that I realized that asymmetry is beauty.

I would give anything to go back in time to jump out of my door, cross through the alley and talk to him. Now, I look at it as an opportunity I missed.

We are all dealing with our own asymmetry in a way. Our condition is like the contorted leg or the mishapen arm...it is beauty. And the only people that sometimes recognize this beauty are the asymmetrical themselves.

Maybe you have been told to think that your asymmetry is disgusting. Just know that there are those out there who think it is beautiful.
