Re: Organic eggs, or Free Range eggs?

Hey, Harmonic, if I had to choose, I would choose the Organic myself, ASSUMING you mean commercial free range eggs. If you mean chickens raised in a small farm situation, it's more of a toss-up.

Here's my thinking. "Free range" is not a very precise term. It means the chickens aren't housed in cages. It does not mean the chickens are living like they would on a small family farm. I.e., if you're running an egg farm and you've got hundreds of chickens in an enclosure, they're not going to be supplementing their feed with any forage at all. So a very high percentage of their diet will be commercial feed which is likely laced with all kinds of junk -- who knows what.

Organic eggs might come from chickens that are more confined but at least those chickens will be ingesting clean food.

If your free range eggs are coming from a small farm type situation, that might be a different story. In that case some portion of the chickens' diet will be insects, worms, etc. that they forage. You'll be able to tell the difference; the yolks will be much much darker (orange) and the eggs will have a eggier flavor. And of course you'll be avoiding whatever issues might be passed on due to the emotional state of caged chickens.
