Alternatives to root canal therapy

Does anyone know what are the alternatives for root canal therapy? If a tooth is in a condition that the dr. suggests a root canal therapy what can be done instead? Pull the tooth? I'm looking for a quick reply since I'm going to the dentist on Monday and i want to make sure I do it right. What can be done if an infected tooth causing me acne?
