A few more things to consider for the advanced newbie..

Just to get the grey matter pumping on this subject:

1> Soil from the forest, particularly from an old-growth forest, contains many more organisms than standard city, suburb, & agricultral soil. Can really benefit the compost even by adding just 1 handful.

2> If it is a contained compost pile - Byproducts of the sea {Fish & Plant} contains many minerals and is very good for the compost. Basiclly stuff from the sea dissolves {called autolysis}. Land animal stuff does not {rot}

3> Which leads to an ancient Japanese Super-Compost called Bokashi which is partly composed of the above.

4> Then leads to some of the work by Rudolf Steiner & Biodynamics {Way more than simply the Double Digging method exhorted by some}.

5> There is also rules to adding Grass Clippings to the compost. Read the book by Robert Kourik "Designing & Maintaining Your Edible Landscape, Naturally."
