To a large extent, it depends on who you rely on for this kind of information. Just as a for instance, if you are willing to at least consider research (more accurately - rumors and snippets of clues to past research) from outside orthodoxy, cancer has been linked to viral causes since, approximately, the late 1920's and early 30's. There were medical researchers from even earlier periods (1800s) who had theorized some of the same; Beuchamp comes to mind. But those people and their earlier efforts did not have the tools / equipment to test / challenge and or confirm their own theories. For a relatively brief period, Rife changed that situation. In the 20's & 30's, Royal Rife invented the diagnostic equipment - mainly never-before duplicated (at least, not publicly) microscopic capabilities, necessary for him to subsequently discover that various cancers each are attributed to viruses; with microscopes he designed and built, he was able to see live pathogens - viruses, bacteria, fungi - and subsequently photograph via cameras built into these microscopes. He also cataloged many of these viruses. Therein he documented some of the more notable characteristics - namely frequency, that distinguish many of these viruses from each other. During this same period, he also claims to have discovered (actually confirmed assertions from early years) pleo-morphism - the ability of viruses to morph back and forth from virus to bacteria. In the course of completely dismissing and white-washing Rife's work, research, discoveries and attendant inventions therein, the latter profound discovery is tops on the list of what orthodoxy has religiously denied over the years.

PS - With all the above info on Rife having been said, I am not aware that Rife ever hinted that he believed viruses were the only cause of cancers. Environmental hazards (air, airwaves, water, land, food, pop culture, etc) and the lifestyle choices available therein, coupled with the number of people on this planet eligible to choose (both willingly and not) PLUS all the variable potential for defects to manifest  (bio / genetic) possessed by by all the people in the world, is likely to contribute to causes of cancers. 90 years in the wake of his life, there is good reason to believe that these contributors to causes of cancers that include manufactured elements are the kind that were probably a lot less prevalent in Rife's day compared to today. Just to cite one broad example, Monsanto would be at the top of such a list of manufacturers and one can go right down the chain of the food / industry / commerce chain from there and find contributing causes.
