Chicken fried steak anyone?
Never had any growing up.
Though my parents were from the "South".
They did pick cotton as kids during the
Depression and pick greens (mustard) along the road to add to the dinner fare.
It is interesting how we acclimate to types of food as children.
Now, if you give me a chicken fried steak and I can see the steak.
You obviously don't have enough gravy on that sucker!
And why yes, I would like a little mashed potatoes with my gravy.
.....;-)
My wife and I found Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" and Andrew Zimmer's "Bizarre Foods" on the Travel Channel a couple of years ago.
Do yourself a favor. Watch several episodes of each.
Both have a profound respect for a cultures ability to take something that really is inedible and turn it into something that "can" be delicious.
Country gravy was made with the "drippings" of either bacon or sausage.
Biscuits and gravy.
Hummm, flavored flour on flour biscuits.
Do people really think about that?
It's original purpose was most likely as a filler for the stomach.
