When you cut down to eating a too small amount of food your body goes into starvation mode and uses even less calories because it thinks it is starving and conserves the small amount of food it is getting.

Also, when a person is dieting for weight loss you can hit plateaus where you will stay the same weight for a while. It could be a few days or even a few weeks.
