When can I plant my fig trees?

I have 2 fig trees that went from the store's pot to my own larger pots about 1 1/2 years ago. One is Celeste and one is Brown Turkey. I live in zone 7b/8 and they don't do so great in the pot during the summer, it's too hot so the pot dries out way too fast. I definitely need to plant them in the ground. My question is this: Is it too late to plant them in the ground right now? (late April) They have already leafed out but the leaves aren't full-sized yet, and there is no sign of fruiting. Would it be okay to put them in the ground or do I need to wait until the fall??
