If I were you and you really like this guy, I would give it a shot and call him.  If he works in a smelly place, then he's probably not too spooked by odors. 

Based on my way of being, and I fully appreciate and respect the fact that not everyone is the same, I would talk about the "gorilla in the room" at the first hint of his body language telling me that he senses my odor.  I would ask him if he senses a peculiar scent ONLY IF YOU THINK HE DOES.  If he says yeah, then you might start easing in on the topic.  Chances are, he might even be smelly himself, or that he just can't smell at all and that's why he's working there.  WHO KNOWS, but it's worth a shot...I think so.
