How much longer must you be there for schooling? You need to be somewhere you both agree on.
It's probably only natural that he craves the comfortable nest of his buddies and family, especially when it seems you both are rather lonely there. You seem more used to going it alone and being independent, but even you need more than just him to satisfy your emotional needs. It's always dangerous to depend on one person to get all your needs met.
As much as he cares, I'm sure he does feel guilty in the security of his friends, knowing you are basically alone without him. The more alone you are, the more smothered he feels as your only outlet.
If you can't leave soon for a mutually acceptable location, it might be wisest to develop friendships (most do so on the job) and try to give him his space for the other relationships he apparently needs. You know the old saying about if you love someone, let him go (freely!)...if he comes back, he's yours and loves you even more as the buddies lose their appeal next to you!
