Re: 2 job openings and 5,000 applicants
Hey, I am all for supply and demand.
As far as demand goes, I don't want an illegal who doesn't speak english, or for that matter, a woman or puny man who can't carry me out of that burning building. I want a strong man who speaks english to come rescue me. That's my demand. I'm sure there are fire-fighting jobs that strong women can do, but not necessarily all of them.
You get what you pay for. If we lower the pay so that fire fighting and burger flipping are equal, then what will we end up with? Crappy firefighters. I don't want illiterates and illegals being the only people willing to become a firefighter.
If 5,000 apply for 1 or 2 job openings, good, they can choose the best ones. You know all of those people aren't equally qualified. Better than having to cull the dregs of society. No need to "open it up" to illegals, if we already have an overabundance of applicants.
$20,000? That's an insult, and absolutely impossible in california.
The cost of living is relatively low where I live, so I guess they can make 40-50k a year and be all right. I don't begrudge them being able to go to school or go boating during their time off. Good for them.
Anyway, as long as local and/or state government and taxes determine and pay the salaries, I'm fine with that. Does the federal government have a part in that? That, I might have a problem with.
I'm no socialist. Firefighters protect private property and human life, two of our basic rights. There are a lot of tax-funded things I would change or do away with, but fire fighters is one of the last I'd mess with, especially if the program is operated on a local level. With the complexities of it "going private" and all that would entail, I can't imagine how that could possibly work.
Here you are suggesting amnesty for illegals willing to become firefighters! No thanks!
