Glad you're going to the doctor tomorrow..
I'd definitely ask for a type-specific culture to be done on your symptomatic areas. Some folks herpes outbreaks are in the form of what is called "paper cut" lesions which is somewhat similar to what you're describing. Testing is the only way to know. One step better than a culture would be a PCR test done from a swab of the area. The very sensitive PCR test looks for viral DNA. I don't know how many doctors are doing it yet, but it's available nationwide through the Westover Heights Clinic in Portland, OR.

About the flu-like symptoms.. I'd more suspect that you actually had "the flu" and that may have lowered your immune resistance to other things such as herpes, if, indeed, you really do have herpes. The flu-like symptoms connected with a new herpes infection are of the fever and body ache type and generally don't involve respiratory symptoms.
About your visit tomorrow.. If there is any suspicion on the doctor's part that this is herpes, even prior to test results, they should give you a prescription for antiviral meds. It is now recommended that antivirals be started ASAP if there is any suspicion of herpes so as to get relief started as soon as possible. The drugs are very safe with a long history, so there isn't an issue in that regard.
Come back and let us know how it goes tomorrow.
