let's think about this one

Ok, at first glance, this "sounds good." Maybe if you are weak and feel you have no alternatives, it's better than nothing. But consider -

- Most people ignore car alarms. They so frequently go off these days. It's not guaranteed to attract anyone to help you. If you explained to everyone in your neighborhood - if you have a Neighborhood Watch or whatever - I could see it being helpful (if you don't mind some false alarms). I mean, these things go off with the tiniest bump sometimes. I look around, but I mostly ignore them. Get out of bed for one? Yeesh. In my neighborhood, I'd be up one night a week, at least.

- Maybe you think it would scare off the robber, if nothing else. But consider what it's also going to do: create a distracting wall of sound. If the robber doesn't dart, he might just keep at what he was doing...because now, maybe nobody's going to hear your screams. It could give them some cover for whatever noise they WERE making. It's going to interfere with your senses - you won't be able to hear what they were doing.

- Do the follow things to allow you to see, and to hear as well as you could before:
- keep a flaslight next to your bed
- keep a loud horn next to your bed
- get a light switch installed next to your bed to flip on the overhead light
- install a panic button that calls the cops (I've seen someone with this one)
- have a gun next to your bed
- have a land-line phone next to your bed to call 911 (not the only thing you should do)
- have a Cell Phone next to your bed
- get a dog

There are lots of other reasons that this isn't the greatest idea, or even the most effective. There are also lots of other things you can do.
