Came across this forum about a week ago and decided to try this practice. I have had to greater and lesser degrees peridontal disease for a number of years. Over the past couple of years my gums have gotten worse due to developing a very dry mouth which started after having a hysterectomy for endometrial cancer and having to take some short term medication which made the situation worse. I am an R.N. as well as practiced many complimentary therapies over the years especially aromatherapy and here are my observations. After practicing oil pulling for about 5 days with sunflower oil my teeth are definitely whiter, my mouth is no longer dry, and I have no further bleeding when flossing. I also switched to Vicco toothpaste during this time as well. I can't comment on the total detox effect of this practice, but the healing of infective dental problems make perfect sense to me especially from an aromatherapy perspective. Plant oils are composed of many phytochemicals which have antimicrobial as well as other healing properties, and just the oral lubricative effect of the oil I tend to think would effectively treat oral dryness which enhances the development of infective gum disease. I am so glad I came across this practice as I was heading down the road to the peridontist and did not want to go there!!!
