Fasting cleanses the body of the toxins that build up in our bodies over time. You can't escape toxins our modern world where within 5 years from memory DDT had traveled the world and was present in the remotest places in the tiniest creatures all over the planet. Every day westerners at least eat a myriad of chemical concoctions much of which has little relation to real food. Not all of it comes out the other end, a lot of it has to be stored somewhere in our body due to it's very nature of not being able to be easily processed or due to our lifestyle and not allowing our body time to process the 'foods' properly for example by overeating.
When we fast our body ingests complete nutrition to live on from it's own stores and our body receives perfect nourishment while carrying out a complete 'spring cleaning'. As well as cleansing the body of built up toxins it also takes the time to repair and/or replace damaged cells. Even cancer cells can be broken down and used as fuel for the body.
Muscle mass is useful and not used up unless the rest of the stores are incomplete for it's nutrition requirements and this is rare. The body first uses fat stores which are designed just for that purpose, and also dead and useless cells such as tumors for fuel. Muscles are only used after all else is depleted. Can you imagine what a person would look like losing a third or more of their body weight in muscles while leaving all the flab just hanging on their bones? It just doesn't happen, the fat is used first it's amazing that people just don't think about what they are saying but can believe it totally.
