I am not a muay thai expert by any means. I have studied it. I think there are a lot of dumbed up versions of this ring fighting art here in the States. There are two things about it that I couldn't use effectively while I was sparring.
1. The square like stance they employ. I would always get hit in the stomach.
My kick boxing instructor told me they don't use that stance in Thailand. He told me those instructors you learned it from saw it on some films. (That made me laugh.)
2. The elbows. I never land any elbows when I was sparring a kick boxer. It made more sense to me to just throw jabs and punches. I only tried it a couple of times and gave up. Years later I heard a good use for the elbows is when you are locked up in that hold where the Thai boxer has your head under his hands. That makes sense but I never tried that one.
