Re: Support for the Draft, if it were needed
I understand and appreciate the very difficult position you and probably most americans are in (especially the ones that are trying to "ignore/block out") the atrocities done in the name of democracy in Iraq.
"...............All that being said, I do support our military.
I do not always support their behavior and do
not agree with what they are asked to do. I am
shamed by many of the actions, like Abu Grab and
Guantanamo and many of the other ways they have
violated the Geneva Conventions and the way they
have abused the Iraqi people. But, they are our
men and women, sons and daughters, and husbands
and wives................"
This reminds me of something equally schocking that I saw only yesterday on a German/French TV Chanel ("Arte") about the incredible protest an exhibition on Nazi atrocities in 1999 instigated in Germany. Mainly from the young, neo-Nazi-skinhead-scene. who in their own right have quite a few atrocities to account for up into our present day. Strangely enough one of their main arguments was that their granddads were totally innocent and the pics in the Exhibition had all been set-up to make them look like the monsters they are/were. One of the interviewed neo-Nazi said the stories and behaviour of their granddads verified that they were loving individuals, thereby inferring that it was´nt possible that they were capable of those awful crimes. The strangest thing tho is that the Germanys have been quite consistent in educating the post war generation on the Nazi atrocities B U T the family connection is probably hard or almost impossible to "wipe" out.
Supporting a military that´s fighting to defend one´s basic human rights is one thing - supporting a military that´s been sent to fight for the sake of GR$$ED is another.
Thank the Almighty, I have not (up until now) had to take a stance like you have and I pray that I´d follow the dictates of my conscience and "be the change that I want to see in others". Pl accept my apologies for being so harsh - I´m learning as well!!!
Salaam maleikum - May you /we realize the Peace within.
P.S. I think "detachment" would be the answer to some of the ills mentioned above. We´re all way to attached to the illusion of brother, sisters, granddads, the rich american-way-of-life (a.k.a. EGO) - not quite realizing its all "here today and gone tomorrow". The only "thing" that lives on is RIGHT and WRONG!
