Just removed the Mirena 6 days ago, some questions.
I had the Mirena inserted approximately four years ago after the birth of my second child. The year prior to that I had the "normal" iud without hormones, that had to be removed because there was literally only 14 days out of the month that I did not have my period (never a problem prior to the iud). My midwife suggested the switch to Mirena due to the benefit of it "eliminating" your period. Well, with the Mirena my period continued, which happens to 2% of people who receive the Mirena, but at least it was only once a month.
I know the next part is going to sound awful, but since having the Mirena inserted I no longer have health insurance. I have never (thanks be to God)had bad PMS prior to the Mirena and for the past four years every time I was getting my period I would feel as if I wanted to kill someone. My long term, live in boyfriend, has had a vasectomy, so I decided to remove the Mirena myself six days ago. ( I know, probably not the brightest idea), but without insurance I did not want to spend up to $183 to have it removed. The removal went without a hitch (no pun intended), luckily.
Anyway, I started my period the day after I removed the Mirena. For the past six days I have had a very heavy period and last night I was even passing some rather large clots and even had to break out the heating pad from the cramping last night. That is how I found this forum, thank goodness, because I was researching to see what any "after effects" might be. Wow, what an eye opener. The funny thing is I have suffered from so many of these side effects that everyone is discussing, but I never attributed it to my iud due to the fact that my midwife made it seem like such a "simplistic and mild" form of birth control even knowing how "hormone sensitive" I am, meaning birth control pills and I do not get along.
I can say this though, the itching. All making sense now. I suffer from mild to moderate
Psoriasis on the back of my head. It has progressed to severe (itching constantly, lots of Benadryl, ugh!) over the past couple of years. Since removing my Mirena, my itching has literally been cut in half and my
Psoriasis seems to be getting better. And this is only after six days. I know that iud contributed to its worsening. So, if you are possibly thinking about getting a Mirena and have stumbled upon this site, if you have any skin conditions, i.e. eczema, psoriasis, think twice, the Mirena will contribute to that. Also, I have never suffered, but from the occasional blemish, and am currently on Tetracycline for acne, imagine that, see how it's all coming together for me now? If you have skin difficulties to begin with, think about that before getting this iud.
What angers me is the fact that I have known so many women who have taken the Depo shot and I watched what they went through i.e. severe mood swings, extensive weight gain, etc. I vowed to myself that I would NEVER get the Depo shot and now I am finding out that essentially I had it through an iud the whole time. (Explains my PMS and weight gain, even after watching what I eat and going to the gym 3-4 times a week)
My question is this, and Kabel, I have been reading your responses and hope you read this and respond to it as well, and any one else who might have answers. Exactly how long does it take for the hormones from the iud to "clear" your system?
When do I get to look forward to my body becoming my own again? Also, after the removal of an iud should you wait any length of time before you have sexual relations or can you start right away? Are there any specific side effects after removal that I should be aware of or watch out for? I would ask these questions of my midwife, but you know the whole insurance thing.
Thank you sooo much.
With Regards.
