The Mirena doesn't seem to be working out for me either. My husband and I have a 13 month old and a 3 year old so we're not really ready to have any more kids right now and are facing the same dilemma you are. My family has handed down a pretty unorthodox form of birth control for 5 generations. I'm not saying that it works because I haven't personally tried it but in a time when other women were having 10 or more children my great-great grandmother had 4, great-grandmother had 3, grandmother had 4 (one set of twins), Great-Aunts had 2, Aunt had 2 and my cousin has successfully used this without becoming pregnant for the past 7 years. Are you ready? Basically you buy the empty capsules at the health-food store and fill them with a very salty mixture of lard and ground Sea Salt . You insert them into your vagina before sex giving them enough lead time so that the capsule can dissolve. The premise is that it changes the pH balance of your vagina making an unfavorable environment for sperm. I HAVE NO MEDICAL TRAINING AND HAVE NO IDEA HOW THIS WORKS OR WHY IT WORKS so take this advise with a grain of salt if you will. For my husband and I, I think the best route will be rhythm method (my cycle before Mirena was 28 days and could be pinned within a few hours), condoms and whatever else we have to do that doesn't involve interfering with my body any more than we have to.
