some of you may know that a few months ago i was in a car accident that left me with a perforated bowel amongst other injuries.. I went into septic shock after my surgery, and the doctors had to pump me full of liquids or something to keep my heart from stopping. from what my family tells me, is i swelled up like a balloon. No longer did i have a neck..i looked like that purple girl from willy wonka the movie. anywayz, since i been home, trying to get better and have even completed 2 liver flushes, ive noticed that my hair is not as strong on my scalp as it was before the accident.. I realized i must of lost alot of vital nutriests or whatever from the liquids they gave me since the way my body detoxed was mostly through my pores.. i have also noticed recently that these horizontal indentations on my nails are now on my nails, and pretty visible..this sucks. I used to keep my head buzzed like GI Jane because of my trauma-induced alopecia ...

Coincidence? I have no idea.

This is a reply to # 878,192Well, I can't PROVE "it" did anything ... *wink* ... but my hair loss slowed down and then stopped. But what is more amazing than THAT is the fact that the bald patches "filled themselves in" on their own accord ... and, I no longer have to keep my head buzzed.
You have to understand, at the time I first made the decision to shave my own head, I figgered "hey, if I'm gonna go bald ANYWAY I'm gonna go bald MY WAY."
(This gal had to find some way to hold her head high when the bull charged her ... so she calculated the steps and grabbed him by the horns, so to speak.)
Anyway, since January, I've been able to put the clippers down. I now sport a short Pixie style ... and my head is held even higher than before!!!!

MoreThis is a reply to # 878,139The first time I experienced Alocecia was after my fiancee called off our wedding just two weeks before the event. Naturally I was devestated and it showed in my hair.
The second time I experienced Alopecia was after the birth of my first son, but the hair came back on it's own. For the last 6 years I have been using 5% minoxidil and it worked well. Whenever I stopped using it, the hair would fall out again. But after 6 years of using it, it has stopped being as effective. I have since stopped using it altogether in the hope that OP will stop the "fall". I couldn't say for sure that it has stopped, but it has slowed, and I hope in time to even regrow what has been lost.
I have also started taking biotin and using amla oil to help things along. Giving up shampoo's with SLS is also key to healthy hair. - Re: trauma and hair loss. sandover

FWIW, I have had really thick hair for the past couple of years as a result, I think, of not washing it often or blow-drying it. (I wash it about every 7-10 days...the first few weeks it got a little oily, but then my scalp stopped producing as much oil -- I think because when it gets washed the scalp is told to produce more oil, if that makes sense.)
The other thing that comes to mind, which is slightly off-topic, is iodine. I know some people have had good results with Iodine and hair graying. My feeling is that Iodine is something we are all pretty deficient in, and which is important throughout the body and which helps all bodily functions. Have you considered Iodine therapy? If your hair is falling out, chances are the rest of you is in turmoil, too, and iodine will really help your body straighten itself out.

This is a reply to # 878,139I had the balloon body swelling after being pumped with fluids too, my health went down hill fast after the operation, I wasnt absorbing my nutrients. A friend of a friend mentioned he went through the same ordeal after an operation and his doctor recommended electrolytes, the electrolytes healed him. Once I started on electrolytes I noticed I was getting more energy from my food and certain weird health symptoms were better-including my hair falling out. HTH
I use ChemBalance electrolytes made from the original company.

This is a reply to # 878,980Thanks for sharing, I never thought to take electrolytes during or after my cancer treatment. I should have taken them after my final surgery but the thought didn’t even cross my mind.
If you are post surgery or dealing with a tricky recovery or just overall burnout don’t do what I did and have electrolytes! I found some information you MAY or MAY NOT be interested in.
I've recently read that Biotin(sp?) is very promising for new hair growth and hair follicle restoration ... regardless of hair loss stage.
I would like to do some more research on this vitamin supplement ... and maybe even add it to my own regimen (for additional insurance) ... before I strongly advocate it.
But, seeing how we are in the same boat together, I was thinking we could also look into it together?
