Hi Scott, I have had exactly the same tension/shallow feeling you described a lot in the past. I know how you feel, it is SO distressing feeling like you can't take a proper breath. Now I only get it really occasionally (and only mildly) when I am stressed. In thinking back to when I stopped getting this problem so much, I realised it was after my first liver flush!!! I never realised this before. My first
Liver Flush was such a radical health change for me - lots of stones and toxic bile. Like many on this site, my allergies, skin problems, constipation, etc et. cleared up.
Like the others suggest: yoga, deep breathing, tai chi, swimming, whatever gets oxygen into you will help! And of course meditation or other means of relaxation.
A technique I learnt from singing lessons: put your hands on either side of your rib cage (easier if you put the BACKS of hands on your body with fingers pointing to the back), breathe so that you push your hands out sideways when you inflate your lungs. Hold your breath and let it out slowly. I do this standing up. When you're going to sleep at night, put your hands (palms down) on your belly (abdomen), concentrate on breathing INTO your hands. This will help you to take deeper breaths.
Good luck and let us know!
