First let me say that if you "really" felt like eating a burger... you did well... !!!
its important to eat good, healthy food, but one must not become his/her own dictator - the soul is the number one organ in our body- !!! so keep it happy.
however, in short, here is my experience with fasting
about 8 years ago , when I was 20 I moved from Europe to the USA. during my first year I started eating fast-foods, delivery-pizzas, etc... certainly not every night but it was quite frequent... at the beginning I had no problems. I went swimming and did other sports, I was burning everything...
unfortunately, I also had phases when I didn't swim and lived a sedentary lifestyle, I was a social smoker, but in those phases I would smoke daily...
on myn last year of university, worried about making the grades to go to graduate school - I stopped sports all together- and locked my self at home with the books.... and with drive-in-burgers; sodas; delivery pizzas etc... ect....
eventually I gained a lot a weight .... I had a fat belly, and my clothes did no longer fit, I smoked about a two packs of cigarettes per day,
it was so bad that once my mother when picking me up at an airpor did not even recognise me....
.... a few months after finishing university... I was feeling depressed about my appearance , always lethargic and I addicted to fast foods - although I did also like to eat genuine, tasty foods (even if a bit rich).....
anyway, one day in a health-food store I found a flyer about a supervised fast , all tha talk about detoxing, breaking addictions and loosing weight sonded very good and I decided to go and join their program...
eventually , I did I supervised fast that lasted 21 days.... 3 days transitioning in with raw foods - 15 days only on rigorously strained (completely liquid) juices... and 3 days of phasing out.....
I lost all the unwanted weight, got back in shape, quit smoking, regained self confidence, felt amazingly energetic ( I had lost that feelings about 4 years earlier, and people kept telling how healthy and toned up I looked....
it was an amazing experience !!! my self confidence grew , but I did not beome arrogant, finally I felt in tune with what my body needed and felt that I had gotten rid of years of accumulated toxins and bad habits...
ever since, I fasted another time about two years ago ; again I felt quite stressed (this is life folks - things happpen !!! and we go through phases), was smoking again and was not eating as well as I would have liked (tho, it is now very very rare that I get a craving for junk-food, and when that happens I oblige myself ... cause I am no self-dictator)
this time, since I already knew the skill, I did not need any supervision.... I just bought a juicer, an enema bag (like in my previous supervised fast, I do 1 enema each day to flush toxins from intestine) and did a 16 days fast -including the 3+3 days of tansitioning in and out... once again afterwards I felt fantantastic...
the very same day that I broke the fast I had to travel to a war-torn country (I am an anthropologist, work for a human rights organisation, and participate in independent media projects). for 6 weeks I lived under strict corfew, amidts helicopter raids , shellings, deaths and all the other aberrant things that psychotic leaders and war-lords design to protect their interests....
anyway, what I think is that, also in this case, the fast greately helped me to get rid of toxins, and most of all go to build up the necessary character strenght needed to perform highly stressful and demanding tasks.....
now two years after my last fast, I am fasting again .... dont think that I am a fasting junkie - after all I fasted 3 times with gaps of 8 years and 2 years in between......
I am my third experience now and today I am on the 6th day of a 10-day juice fast !!!!
For several years I have been back in Europe.... once again I am facing several demanding tasks, and once again I think that the fast will help me go through it.... as I said its been two years since my last fast and I dont think I am over doing it..... the benefits for me are enormous......
one more thing; I thought it was funny when you told us about your avocado - bacon burger, mmmmm that sounds delicious, as do the chilli fries with cheese... but I want to say two things:
first: me too if I have a craving for a avocado burger and fries (not during the fast tho) I would eat it !!!!! and enjoy it !!!!! guilt is for fundamentalists !!!! hahahah
second: one can eat perfectly healthy, tasty, genuine food that taste delicious !!!
healthy food is NOT boring !!! think of how many healthy dishes there are in italian cusine -to give only one example-
what we must avoid is dead-processed-chemically-treated junk food !!!! that stuff is no food, it does not taste good and is addictive because of the hight amounts of
additives (excuse the pun), artificial sugars and chemicals these corporate bastards put in it.
take care
hope I did not bore you
love
