I read in a PDF excerpt from the Master Cleanse book online that the only negative effect the author experienced from the Lemonade Fast were headaches, which he attricuted to coffee withdrawals. At this stage I must say I envy people who can go through with this fast.
I have just spent 4 days trying to start, then trying to adapt by weening myself into the fast through a period of pre-fasting, of lemonade and reduced food intake days. No luck.
About 2 hours into the Fast, I feel a migraine coming on. By 3pm I stop drinking the lemonade and go to bed. I sleep one hour. When I awake the migraine has abated, but is still there, dull, but still there. I resume the Lemonade (I'm thirsty). Whammo! One half hour later my migraine is back and by 6pm I have a full blown double temple migraine, that causes my eyes to ache when moved or in light, causes a painful throb across my neck and shoulders and down my back, with heart palpitations: all string migraine symptoms. Next is nausea. I take a painkiller, eat some food, and drink an iced coffee (sorry but coffee is one cure for migraines). This time this works, later it doesn't.
After 4 days of trying to wean in the Lemonade and wean out a minimal and simple raw vegetable diet, I am so sick with migraine pain, so much so that I cannnot tolerate it any longer and have had to take medicine and go to bed and abandon the idea of Lemonade fasting. By now not food not coffee, not sleep, not painkillers can combat the effect of the Lemon Juice.
The last thing I want to do now is take powerful migraine medicine on a daily basis. Migraines don't respond to Asprin especially at full onset! And they are not easily tolerated and often disbailitating.
I hadn't felt migraines this powerful, rapid and disabilitating for about 8 months when doctors mistakenely prescribed Tryptan based migraine medicine for a bout of work and stress related headaches that soon disappeared with rest and diet changes. The Tryptan caused powerful and rapid onset of rebound headaches that became worse the more I took it. I have since not had many headaches at all. ... Until the Lemon juice which seems to imitate the Tryptan.
I even now cling to the idea that the least I can do is a drink ONE glass of 2tbl spoons lemon juice + 8oz water a day, with a normal healthy diet and hope that in the long term, with raw juices, raw foods etc (I was using maple syrup in the lemonade btw), that the negative effect might fade.
Any suggestions as to what this reaction is? ie: my 2 considerations:-
1) a food that personally triggers migraines in me and maybe a few other people?
2) the removal of traces of Tryptan and other headache painkillers leftovers in my body which will eventually result in my not having this reaction to Lemon Juice? (see I live in hope).
If anyone knows any addition to the MC juice or procedure that might offset this effect and allow the MC fast, please comment.
