Natural Hygiene promotes food combination. There is a whole set of "rules" concerning which foods to combine, all for the ease of digestion, but the biggest and most basic rule is eat fruits alone! Especially
Watermelon should only be taken on an empty stomach. They usually take only 20-30 minutes to digest, whereas anything else will take 1-2 hour minimum (including vegetables) and up to 8 hours. So this means eating fruit 30 minutes before a meal, or waiting at least 2 hours after a meal.
Then comes the exception which is that pineapple, papaya (and I have heard apples included) may be eaten with a meal because they have enzymes that help digest the food, without becoming rancid themselves.
Although some raw foodists follow this principle, others say that once you're eating all raw, you can combine anything together.
I have heard this idea that one shouldn't eat fruits alone because of the
Sugar spike. Personally, I can't agree, I've been eating fruits on an empty stomach only for years and I feel great when I do so. Then again, I'm healthy. I'm thinking that for people with
Sugar issues such as diabetes, candida, etc. that the solution is to not eat much fruit, at least for a time until they have begun healing. My grandfather had diabetes he controlled through diet only, and he would eat an apple everyday as his dessert. The healing can come through vegetables, vegetable juicing, and the use of those aforementioned fruits which are pineapple, papaya, and apples in moderation, until the time comes that a person can take the next step. The vegetable juices (especially carrot) can be high glycemic as well, since the fiber is removed, so it's good to combine them with fat, if not with a light meal, so as to slow the
Sugar uptake.
