I recently viewed daniel millers updates, pictures and stuff when he had exfoliative cheilitis, mine doesn't look anything like that. (maybe i have mild version of this?)
So I have this weird cycle with my lips, I wake up, go to shower, my lips get WHITE and then peel immediately, there is nothing i can do about it, then the lips look red, like raw flesh red? Not sure... but they feel and look raw. Then I apply lip balm or chapstick and this same happens in the next morning, please someone tell me what is this and how to fix it? it really makes me uncomfortable and also my lips get white during the day if they get contact with water...
EDIT: And also, I tried to leave them alone for 1 week I believe, I avoided water and peeling as much as I could but It didn't seem to get any better

This is a reply to # 2,358,584yes according to your description you have EC. Some of us have it a lot worse than others, also there are some differences in comparison between each individual case.
And now i am the person who has to tell you that there is a high chance that your condition is not curable. There are just a few legit cure claims.
Try out Aquaphor and avoid overthinking your condition.

And if you are interested, please read my future plans.
That picture is taken today, 3 days after peeling, I ditched chapstick so there is nothing on my lips right now, I have been avoiding water contact with my lips still and it seems to work.(I still shower, drink it and brush my teeth) (drinking with straws) After this I will start posting weekly photos/videos to actually see if there is any improvement.

This is a reply to # 2,358,987Don't let anyone tell you that ec can't be cured. That's just bullshit. Ive had ec for over 6 years it was just as bad as Daniel Miller's with the thick yellow crust and inflammation. I've already seen my lips heal with my own eyes. Your case doesn't doesn't look nearly as bad as mine were.
Also, why is everyone avoiding water? I know water turns the skin white but really? Why does it matter? The skin is already dead. It's not like water is gonna kill it further. You can use water to your advantage by easily removing the dead skin when it's white and soft. Leaving your lips alone won't cure ec. Don't even bother.
In my experience, the lips need a barrier that not only protects but moisturizes the skin. If you got ec from biting your lips like I did then the problem is external and can only be treated from the outside.

When my EC was milder (like the the OP's), I could control it with Aquaphor and Vaseline (applying about 10-15 times daily), So I definitley agree that the skin needs a barrier from the air. However, at this point (prior to six months ago) I didn't actually even realise I had EC (I knew my lips would chap and peel constantly if I left them without Vaseline but it I thought I just had naturally dry lips, made worse as a result of accutane I took when I was younger).
However, since my lips were basically fine and normal looking if I applied Vaseline 15 times daily, I did 't really think I had a serious problem. So basically I went and did a stupid thing - I got a lip filler. Then all hell broke loose. My skin started peeling off like mad and ulcerated within two weeks. During this time I kept a thick layer of Aquaphor on my lips constantly. However, the desqueamation didn't stop at all. It basically looked like I had Stephen Johnson's syndrome on my lips. Horrendous. FML seriously.
I was misdiagnosed with a bunch of things because nobody had seen the reaction I had before. Eventually a doctor diagnosed desqueamation of the lip. I came to the conclusion that I had EC on my own and realised I had a milder version of it for about 10 years retrospectively.
However. I since had the lip filler product take out with an enzyme and the size of my lips almost went back to normal. However, I still have those gigantic yellow crusts (so my lips look basically exactly like Daniel Miller's did when they were at their most sevre). Every time I try to put aquaphor on now, it just seems to make everything worse. The crusts get soft and fall off, exposing raw skin. I also tried to put aquaphor on immediately after the crusts fall off but it doesn't stop the build up at all (white dead skin accumulates on my lips) and my lips generally look rawer and more inflamed.
So my question is, did you notice aquaphor making your lips worse before it got better? If so, how much worse did it get? How long did you persevere before it got better. Thanks in advance- Re: Do I even have exfoliative cheil... CrustNoMore

I'm going to add that I have never peeled, picked or licked my lips at all. When I was a kid, my grandmother taught me that licking my lips would make them dry and to use Vaseline or lip balm instead if they were chapped and it stuck with me. Nobody should be picking, manually peeling, licking or doing anything else to disrupt the healing process if they want to control EC. From my experience of having mildly peeling lips for 10 years, that were under control with Vaseline and looked perfectly healthy and normal if I continued using Vaseline but would be chapped the instant I stopped using it, I don't think it is possible to be entirely *cured* of EC but you can definitely *control* the symptoms. It's a bit like diabetes. You can't get rid of diabetes but you can regain almost normal health by eliminating high sugar foods from your diet and injecting insulin daily. With EC, you can't entirely stop the accelerated desqueamation process but you can avoid triggering factors and use a moisturising barrier and thus your lips will normalise. When I got the lip filler, it was probably the EC equivalent of going into a diabetic coma. Picking and licking the lips is probably equivalent to a diabetes patient on a sugar binge. When people here are saying they got EC from picking their lips, how often were they picking the lips? I agree you shouldn't be picking your lips if you have EC but unless you were picking your lips every single day on an ongoing basis or licking them constantly then it is not the CAUSE of you EC but an aggravating factor (in the way that eating 3 tubs of Ben and Jerry's is not the direct root cause of a diabetic coma but that does not mean that it can't trigger a diabetic coma in a succeptible individual). There is no way that picking your lips a few times a few years ago can cause EC a few years later. Also, if this was the cause the leave alone method would work and much quicker. I have seen a case report of woman with a severe dog bite to her lip (almost 70% of the lip skin was missing) and the whole thing grew back in 3 weeks.

This is a reply to # 2,359,162I used to bite my lips everyday for a year leaving my lips raw and dried out. While I'm not exactly sure what caused my ec, I'm pretty sure the there's nothing wrong with me internally. I'm not gonna get into theories about the cause of my ec or yours for that matter.
To answer your question,
If the dermis (1st skin layer) is missing or damaged, Aquaphor won't do anything except suppress the symptoms. You'll know this if you check your peeling cycle. Does it peel every 3 days? Does the skin turn white when wet? Actually if you see dead skin on the first day (raw lips) forming, then the above statement is true. This is true for most people with ec. If you can fix the dermis, then you're halfway cured.
When I apply aquaphor now, my skin grows back because I think the dermis is healed.
How did I fix the dermis?
I applied a product called Gloves in a Bottle. It would've healed my lips entirely if only I left the product on for longer.
I would suggest you give this product a try. Apply one thick coat on raw lips then leave it alone for a few weeks. It should come off by itself then. You should be able to see new skin within 3 days. If you don't, then it's obviously not working for you or you didn't apply correctly. Just don't take it off or you'll have to start over again.

This is a reply to # 2,359,167Thanks a lot for your message. I bought gloves in a bottle and am currently trying it out. Just something I have been doing lately which might help you since it helped me a bit. I read hospitals sometimes treat burn victims with this method called moist wound healing. I read a case history where a woman had a big portion of her lip bitten off by a dog and to treat her the hospital put Vaseline on her lips and then applied cling film on top. Since I can't handle aquaphor right now but I need to do something to increase the hydration in my lips, I started cutting a square of cling film and sticking it over my lower face so it adheres to the lips (it sticks on by itself so there is no real need for tape). It helps to keep the moisture locked into your lips because it prevents the moisture from evaporating but it has the benefit of not softening and causing the skin to peel off too early. Obviously you can't do this in public but if you are around the house most of the time like me it's a solution of sorts.

This is what my lips looked like the next day after Gloves in a bottle application. You can already see new skin thats pinker. I didn't take a picture of my raw lips but it was very red and inflamed.
This is what it looked like on day 3. Here you can see the upper lip looks a lot browner with a more natural color. The product barrier looks whiter too and underneath the lines are already returning. Unfortunately the previous night I smiled too much and the barrier cracked open in the middle, so I decided to take it off and start over again.
By the 6th day I think the inflammation goes down completely.

This is a reply to # 2,359,577Thanks a lot for your message and pictures. I think my condition is more severe than yours so, unfortunately, I am not seeing these fast results. However, I do think gloves in a bottle is the best moisturiser I have tried so far since my EC became really severe because all other moisturisers just cause my dry lip buildup to fall off and my lip to become more raw. Gloves in a bottle seems to form a barrier over the build up so it doesn't fall off too soon but it also seems to be doing a good job at hydrating. So thanks for the recommendation. I'll stick with it and keep you updated.
Do you have this problem where you buildup starts on your inner lips and the skin there seems to sort of form a pocket of air (almost like a blister) that you can feel and squash with your fingers (hard to explain) ? I am trying out an artificial saliva product on my inner lips because I am convinced the problem is to do with my mouth being too dry on the inner border of my mouth (maybe I have dry mouth syndrome).
Also, sorry to hear you are feeling bad Franco.
If you don't have Aquaphor in your country, try Vaseline. It's almost as good. The key, though, is consistency. You have to apply it a lot (more than once an hour, basically every time it rubs off your lips).- Re: Do I even have exfoliative cheil... Cottonmouth

This is a reply to # 2,359,629Not really sure what you mean but if you're talking about the "white line" then I used to have that but ever since I've used GIAB I don't really get it anymore.
Does it make your lips look kinda chapped? If yes, then that's a good thing and the product is working. Another thing, did you keep the buildup (dead skin) on before applying GIAB because you should apply it only when the lips are raw. Also, there's no need to reapply every day. You apply it once on raw lips then you leave it alone until comes off on its own which should take a few weeks maybe. At the beginning I used to apply every 30 minutes just to make sure my lips were covered but later realized it was totally unnecessary.

This is a reply to # 2,359,688When applying vaseline or aquaphor, make sure your lips are always moisturized and never let them dry out. That should stop the buildup of dead skin. If you see any changes like new skin developing (you'll notice it by the grayish color) then your lips are healing. Then again, there's a chance it might not work for you. It all depends on how damaged the dermis is.
If aquaphor or Vaseline fails, then I recommend you purchase Gloves in a bottle. From what I can see, your lips don't really look that bad, so Gloves in a bottle is very likely to heal you. (Mine was just as bad as Daniel Miller's and it worked for me). This product healed that white line you mentioned.
