The results suggest that fast food and soda brand knowledge is linked to the development of a preference for sugar, fat and salt in food.
According to USA Today:
"Parents need to carefully consider the types of foods they give to young children at home and in restaurants ... Repeated exposure builds taste preferences."
A separate study also found that diets high in processed foods, fat and Sugar are lowering children's IQ. Researchers found that a predominantly processed-food diet at the age of 3 is directly associated with a lower IQ at age 8.5. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals, on the other hand, helped boost kids' mental performance.
As The Guardian reported:
"Every one-point increase in the study's dietary pattern score – a record of processed fat intake – was associated with a 1.67-point fall in IQ … The brain grows at its fastest rate during the first three years of life.
"It is possible that good nutrition during this period may encourage optimal brain growth," the report added."
As a parent, one of the best gifts you can give your child is a strong nutritional start. The first years of life represent a time of rapid development, during which your child's language, cognitive, social and motor skills are developed.
During the first three years of life, the brain also grows at its fastest rate, and this represents a crucial window of development during which proper nutrition is essential. If your child does not get healthy foods (and ideally first breast milk) during this time, his future intelligence could be impacted.
A new study from British researchers revealed just how big an impact a poor nutritional start can have on your kids. Those who ate a predominantly processed food diet at age 3 had lower IQ scores at age 8.5. For each measured increase in processed foods, participants had a 1.67-point decrease in IQ.
As you might suspect, the opposite also held true, with those eating healthier diets experiencing higher IQ levels. For each measured increase in dietary score, which meant the child was eating more fruits and vegetables for instance, there was a 1.2-point increase in IQ.
Separate research also highlighted just how quickly kids pick up on, and learn to prefer, a junk-food diet.
When parents fed their preschool-aged children junk foods high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, it had a lasting impact on their taste preferences. All of the children tested showed preferences for junk foods, and all (even those who were just 3 years old!) were also able to recognize some soda, fast-food and junk food brands.
The researchers concluded what you probably already suspect: kids who were exposed to junk food, soda and fast food, via advertising and also because their parents fed them these foods, learned to recognize and prefer these foods over healthier choices.
Interestingly, recent studies also show a reduction in IQ when fluoride water is used.
Last year another sobering study was released that found nearly half of the calories consumed by average 2- to 18-year-olds in the United States came from junk foods. The top sources of empty calories that made up half of these calories included just six food categories:
- Soda
- Fruit drinks
- Dairy desserts (ice cream, etc.)
- Grain desserts (cookies, cake, doughnuts, etc.)
- Pizza
- Whole milk
What this list consists of is, primarily, Sugar and fructose, which echoes the top source of calories for U.S. adults as well. The number one source of calories in the United States is high fructose corn syrup, a compound that will lead to chronic degenerative diseases and make you fat.
With a diet like this, it's no wonder that childhood obesity has become an epidemic in the United States and many other parts of the world. If your diet is in large part fructose, the sugar found in soda, fruit juice and countless other processed food products, it will be virtually impossible to stay thin, not to mention healthy.
Although the American Beverage Association claims there is "no association between high fructose corn syrup and obesity," a long lineup of scientific studies suggest otherwise. For example:
- Dr. David Ludwig of Boston Children’s Hospital did a study of the effects of sugar-sweetened drinks on obesity in children. He found that for each additional serving of a sugar-sweetened drink, both body mass index and odds of obesity increased in the children he studied.
- The Fizzy Drink Study in Christchurch, England explored the effects on obesity when soda machines were removed from schools for one year. In the schools where the machines were removed, obesity stayed constant. In the schools where soda machines remained, obesity rates continued to rise.
- In a recent study, 16 volunteers were fed a controlled diet including high levels of fructose. Ten weeks later, the volunteers had produced new fat cells around their hearts, livers and other digestive organs. They also showed signs of food-processing abnormalities linked to diabetes and heart disease. A second group of volunteers who were fed a similar diet, but with glucose replacing fructose, did not have these problems.
Of course, obesity is not the only health risk your child faces if he eats a diet consisting mainly of processed foods and snacks. Along with the potential for lowered IQ mentioned above, a junk food diet can also set the stage for asthma, eczema, and a variety of allergies, inflammatory conditions and autoimmune diseases.
In fact, many of the top diseases plaguing the United States are diet-related, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer. The National Institutes of Health even states that four of the six leading causes of death in the U.S. are linked to unhealthy diets.
Nutritional deficiencies in your child's first years of life can even lead to deficits in brain function that put them at risk of behavioral problems -- from hyperactivity to aggression -- that can last into the teenage years.
So the importance of proper nutrition simply cannot be overstated.
Most parents go to great lengths to keep their children safe. You hold their hand when they walk across the street, teach them to stay away from a hot stove and tell them not to talk to strangers. Yet, the majority of parents feed their children potentially harmful food without a thought for the later consequences.
It's not the occasional treat here and there that I'm referring to, either. It's the fact that most toddlers recognize the sign of the "golden arches" long before they are speaking in full sentences.
Why?
Because they are often raised on French fries, fast-food hamburgers and orange soda, or if "raised" is a bit of a stretch, are taught that French fries, chicken fingers and soda is an acceptable meal (worse yet, they may come to think of it as a reward).
As British chef and food advocate Jamie Oliver explains in the video below, our food culture has changed so drastically over the last 30 years, a majority of young children of today do not know what fresh, whole food is.
Children today can't identify foods, let alone figure out where they come from or how they grow. Oliver shows how the three aspects of the "food landscape," home, school, and main street, have all abandoned real food in favor of quick, cheap, processed foods. Three decades ago, the food available in each of these three areas was mostly fresh and grown locally. Now the majority of foods served, whether at home, in school or in restaurants, are highly processed foods, filled with sugars and chemical additives. Children will simply not know which foods are healthy unless you, as a parent, teach it to them. Food is a part of crucial lifestyle choices first learned at home, so you need to educate yourself about proper nutrition and the dangers of junk food and processed foods in order to change the food culture of your entire family. To give your child the best start at life, and help instill healthy habits that will last a lifetime, you must lead by example. If you're not sure where to start, I recommend . This will provide you with the foundation you need to start making healthy food choices for your family. reading my nutrition plan first The simplest way back toward health, for children and adults alike, is to focus on WHOLE foods -- foods that have not been processed or altered from their original state; food that has been grown or raised as nature intended, without the use of chemical additives, pesticides and fertilizers. You, a family member, or someone you pay will need to invest time in the kitchen cooking fresh wholesome meals from these whole foods so that you can break free from the processed food diet that will ultimately kill you or at least make you sick. By doing this, and eating meals together as a family, your children will receive the proper nutrition their bodies need during the important developmental years while also developing a love for whole fresh foods that will last them a lifetime.

(NaturalNews) Concerned parents are questioning the dangers of a standard American diet (SAD) and exploring more nutritious options for their children. As
serious childhood disease and disfunction escalate to alarming levels, researchers and parents alike begin to make the connection with poor food choices.
Many have found a carefully selected raw and live food diet fosters exuberant mental, physical, and spiritual health in children.
The standard American diet relies heavily on meat, dairy, sugar, hydrogenated fats, and processed foods. This unbalanced approach creates many nutritional
deficiencies and encourages serious illness such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Schizophrenia, autism, and attention deficit disorder are
also linked to the consumption of low quality food. And yet, this is the very diet many children are given from a very young age, thus negatively effecting
intense periods of growth and development.
The SAD model is by no means limited to America. In the UK, an article in the Sunday Times found that the national standard diet is so lacking in nutrition
that it is stunting children's development and threatening the nation's future economy. The story continues with the following observation:
"Among the blizzard of detail accompanying last week's revelations that junk food is damaging our children's brains was buried one startling fact: the
majority of the nation's babies are, to a greater or lesser extent, now weaned on fizzy drinks and crisps."
Nutritional requirements vary depending on the age of the child. From birth to six months, physicians recommend exclusive breast feeding. Beyond six
months, breast feeding is still recommended as solid
is introduced. Many mothers continue to breast feed for years, considering it the most perfect food for their children.
For all ages, leafy greens are the key to radiant health. These champions of a raw food diet supply ample amounts of chlorophyll, bioavailable protein,
vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants. Blending leafy greens helps to concentrate
while breaking down the tough plant cellulose. When prepared in this way, nutrients are liberated and absorption is substantially improved.

. Avoid nutritional deficiencies by providing a wide range of variety.
-Children need bulk; always let children eat whenever they want, even if this means they are grazing all day long.
-Maintain a nutrient dense diet of organic, local fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds, along with moderate amounts of Celtic
and raw honey*. Extra-virgin olive, flax, and hemp seed oils are also extremely beneficial for brain development and overall health. Avocados, bananas, and
sun dried black olives are especially nourishing due to their high content of beneficial fat.
*Raw honey, if used at all, is not recommended until age two due to the possible presence of the botulism bacteria.
The Boutenko's are another example of a thriving all raw family. By adopting a live food diet, the Boutenko's were able to reverse and completely heal
diabetes, hyperthyroidism, Rheumatoid Arthritis , arrhythmia, juvenile diabetes and asthma.

(NaturalNews) If a child eats conventionally grown produce, will it affect his or her health? Recent research revealed that pesticides do show up in the urine of children after consuming non-organic foods. Though the study did not look at whether or not some of the chemicals stay in the tissues and cause damage, other research says they do.
Researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle and Emory University in Atlanta, headed by Chensheng Lu, tested urine samples from 21 children in the Seattle area who ate conventionally grown foods and then ate similar organic varieties for five days, before returning to seven more days of conventional foods. To be extra certain, the organic foods were tested and found to be free of chemicals.
Urine samples were collected twice daily for a period of 7, 12, or 15 consecutive days during each of the four seasons. It was found that levels of organophosphates, a family of pesticides resulting from the creation of nerve gas agents in World War II, could be identified in the urine during the time conventional produce was eaten. Within eight to 36 hours after switching to organic versions, the pesticides in the urine disappeared.
Previous studies have found a correlation between pesticides and neurological problems in the brains of rats. Dr. Theodore Slotkin of North Carolina’s Duke University has written up the results of several such studies. He found that brain development and behavior were both negatively impacted after exposure to organophosphates, especially chlorpyrifos, one of the pesticides in the recent study.
Andrew Schneider, writing in the Seattle P.I. quotes Lu, who says “more research must be done into the harm these pesticides may do to children, even at the low levels found on food... In animal and few human studies, we know chlorpyrifos inhibits an enzyme that transmits a signal in the brain so the body can function properly. Unfortunately, that's all we know.
“It is appropriate to assume that if we - human beings - are exposed to (this class of) pesticides, even though it's a low-level exposure on a daily basis, there are going to be some health concerns down the road," said Lu, who is on the Environmental Protection Agency's pesticide advisory panel.
We do know that toxins affect children differently than adults, as they are still developing and are thus more fragile neurologically. Some pesticides contain potent neurotoxicants, which work by disrupting an organism’s nervous system. There are studies which have found that exposure to pesticides affects growth and neurological development. So it would seem very likely that ingestion of pesticide residue in young children especially would lead to negative effects on health and development. At the very least, there must be an effect to the liver and kidneys for the extra work they are forced to do.
Consider what a teacher’s curriculum guide from Yale University states:
“-A young child’s renal system is not fully developed. For example, a newborn’s kidneys are immature compared to an adult’s, making it more difficult for the infant to eliminate toxic waste. This can lead to a greater buildup and increases their vulnerability.
-A young child’s brain, nervous system, immune system, and other organ systems are still developing and are therefore most susceptible to abnormalities and malfunctions.
-When children are exposed to toxins, there is more time for resulting damage to occur than when adults are exposed. To elaborate, if a series of events have to occur before the toxic effects of chemicals present, then it is more likely that those events will occur someday if the children are exposed early in life as opposed to exposure much later.
-Due to the rapid cell growth in children, they appear to be more susceptible to some carcinogens than adults are.”
Because of such concerns, the Food Quality Protection Act required that by 2006, the EPA was to complete a comprehensive reassessment of the 9,721 pesticides permitted for use. They were to determine safe levels of pesticide residues for all food products.
Even though this law’s passage resulted in a lowering of pesticide amounts applied to foods intended for children, many critics still consider the levels too high for safety. The other concern is that there are no restrictions on imported foods.
This effect was born out by the study, as higher levels of pesticides were found in the children’s urine in the fall and winter, when consumers rely more on imported fruits and vegetables.
Other critics point out that because of this and the EPA’s too lenient restrictions, more needs to be done. They state that it only makes sense to strengthen the limits on such exposure to pesticides at a time when children are evidencing more behavior, learning and neurological problems.
According to Schneider, Lu does not believe children should only eat organic. For Lu’s family, which includes two sons, about 60 percent of the diet is organic. “‘Consumers,’ he says, ‘should be encouraged to buy produce direct from the farmers they know. These need not be just organic farmers, but conventional growers who minimize their use of pesticides.’”
To help consumers make choices as to which foods to buy as organic, the Environmental Workers Group produced a ranking. In this list, the higher the item is ranked, the lower the amount of pesticides to be found in that item. So if a family can only buy some organic produce, the priority would be peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines and strawberries, etc.

Tracing Pesticides in Children From Ingestion to Elimination
I have had questions from mothers who are concerned about their options for milk after they have stopped breast-feeding or are transitioning off formula. Their biggest concerns are about calcium and protein. The fat should also be of concern, because babies need fat in their diet for proper brain development and I think that unheated nut milks and avocado provide the best kind of fat that is easily digested.
The baby’s concern is taste. In transitioning, it is a good idea to mix the breast or formula with alternative, flavored milk, gradually decreasing the formula or breast milk. Breast milk and formula are sweet; therefore using some of my recipes will help in this transition. I hope my assessment of the different milk options will help mothers and grandmothers.
Cow’s Milk
Most pediatricians are advising mothers to transition an infant at one year to whole cow’s milk for the fat content. The calcium, protein and fat in cow’s milk are not digested easily and it is also high in cholesterol. Very young children have been found to have arteriosclerosis and beginning heart disease. Our body produces all the cholesterol we need. Cow’s milk is designed to feed baby cows. The mother cow weans even the baby cow. The nutrients are heated through pasteurization and heated fats and proteins are not the best for a baby’s growing brain and body. The protein is denatured when pasteurized and cannot be used for building, only for calories. Cow’s milk is high in protein and excessive protein in one’s diet causes depletion of calcium from the bones.
In addition, many are intolerant to lactose (milk sugar), which can cause digestive problems such as constipation (also caused by not get enough liquid and /or fiber), bloating, gas and allergies. Milk protein (casein) can trigger croup, asthma, sinus and upper respiratory infections, and a chronic runny nose. For many it causes the body to over produce mucous as a protection from these milk proteins, which are treated by the body as a foreign object. Many sinus and asthma problems have been eliminated when cow’s milk is withdrawn from the diet. I had severe sinus problems for years, which resolved along with constipation, gas and bloating when I eliminated dairy from my diet. Cheese is more of a problem as it is concentrated; for example one gallon of milk makes one pound of cottage cheese. Organic cow’s milk is a better choice but is only devoid of Antibiotics , tranquilizers and growth hormones and still has all of the other issues of cow’s milk. Read Colin Campbell’s book ”The China Study” for more information about dairy and animal protein. Cow’s milk is supplemented with Vitamin D, which can be obtained by 20-30 minutes in the sun on a walk, most days.
Milk Alternatives
Babies love the sweet taste of breast milk and formula. The best choice would be to transition them off breast or bottle to alternative nut milks with dates to sweeten and possibly some carob, which is high in calcium. Finnley will now take sips of my green juice and loves my nut milk.
Nut Milk
I tried making a hemp nut milk (for the balance of Omega 3,6 and 9’s) for Finnley but she did not like it (it has a strong nutty flavor). I have found a nut milk that she likes. It is a mixture of Brazil nut and almond, both of which have worked well with other babies in transition.
I think unheated, raw nut milks are the best alternatives for growing babies. Pasteurization degrades the nutrients. The shelf stable nut milk alternatives would be an inferior nutrition source because they are heated to a very high heat, thus changing all of the nutrients to a less nutritious form. Almonds are rich in magnesium, potassium, manganese, copper, calcium and the antioxidants vitamin E and selenium. Brazil nuts are also a rich source of selenium. The fat and protein in these unheated nut milks remain intact and unchanged. A mixture of Brazil nut (for the selenium), almond (for the calcium), and hemp seed (for the balance of omega3, 6, and 9) would be ideal.
Using a Vitamix is important to process the nut milk into small particles for getting the best yield of milk and nutrients. Soaking the nuts or seeds for 12-24 hours rinsing a couple of times daily removes the enzyme inhibitors that are naturally on nuts or seeds. Soaking in the refrigerator will prevent fermentation. After soaking, we freeze the nuts so that we can make nut milk easily, anytime we want. The soak water should be discarded as it contains the enzyme inhibitors, reducing the digestibility of the nuts and seeds (your plants will love the soak water). Shorter soaking times (less than 8 hours) decrease the nutrient content leaving a higher amount of pulp. I have seen some recipes for using nut butters as a shortcut for nut milks, but I am not sure the nuts are soaked, usually the nuts are subjected to high heat in the processing, and the cost is much greater.
Blending on high until there are no nut particles on the tamper will ensure the nuts have been blended completely. Be careful not to blend until the milk is heated, which degrades the nutrition. There will be a lot of foam with blending. Filling the container to the top will send the mixture flying out, ok if you want a milk bath! More filtered water can be added after blending and straining for the desired consistency. Place in a covered glass container and refrigerate or freeze. Both the milk and pulp freeze well. Stir well before serving. The Soy/Nut Milk Maker I think is an unnecessary kitchen tool if you have a Vitamix, because you cannot make as much milk and we are not heating the milk, which this tool is designed to do.
Straining these nut milks through a fine mesh is very important because babies and children are very sensitive to texture. The pulp can be used in other recipes such as Nana’s Teething Biscuits (which can also be used for bread). I have tried several methods for straining the nut milk pulp, using muslin cloth, linen, paint strainer bags (holes are too large), and panty hose, preferably not used, (the dye and ease of use was unacceptable). I have used several nut bags and I have found the best! Also if feeding these milks through a bottle, strain again after adding dates and vanilla bean (fine particles can stop up the nipple, if this happens, simply squeeze the nipple to remove the particle.). See our nut bags, The best thing I have found for straining nut milks! click to order.
Soymilk is not a good alternative to cow’s milk as it can unbalance hormones and stimulates the thyroid gland creating a hyperactive thyroid leading to hypothyroidism. Soy also has phytates, which can prevent the absorption of minerals. For Further reading: “The Whole Soy Story: The dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food” by Kaayla Daniel.
Rice Milk is largely a source of carbohydrates and should not be used as a nutritional replacement for milk, as it is very low in protein and fat, both of which are necessary for the nutrition of babies and children.

Yield: 6-8`cups
• 3 cups almonds or 2 cups Brazil nuts, or 2 cups hemp seeds after soaking for 24 hours and draining (other soaked nuts may be used and amounts may vary)
• These nuts double in size with soaking
• Another choice would be a mixture of 1 ½ cups of soaked almonds and 1 cup soaked Brazil nuts (Finnley likes this best)
• 5-6 cups filtered water
• Blend to a very fine consistency
1. Strain milk to remove skins and pulp, this can be done through a nut bag.
2. Return strained milk to blender and add any of the flavors below, blending well.
3. Strain again after adding flavors, or blend flavors with nuts and strain once.
4. Add filtered water to make 8 cups or any concentration that is pleasing to your taste.
• May be kept in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Brazil nut milk has a longer shelf life and both freeze well.
• For your Vitamix and the best Nut Bag Ever!
Sweet Vanilla Milk
6 cups almond/Brazil nut milk
½ teaspoon Sea Salt (optional)
5-6 medjool dates soaked in filtered water

Carob Milk (a healthy substitute for chocolate, which has caffeine and Theo bromine and other unhealthy substances, not good nutrition for children. Carob is high in calcium.)
6 cups almond/Brazil nut milk
½ teaspoon Sea Salt (optional)
1/3 vanilla bean
6-7 medjool dates soaked in filtered water
¼ cup carob
Banana Pudding Milk
6 cups almond/Brazil nut milk
½ teaspoon Sea Salt (optional)
1/3 vanilla bean
4-5 medjool dates soaked in filtered water
2 very ripe bananas
Cinnamon Milk
6 cups of almond/
Brazil nut milk
½ teaspoon sea salt (optional)
8 dates
2 inches vanilla bean
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Strawberry Milk
3 cups almond/Brazil nut milk
½ teaspoon sea salt (optional)
1/3 vanilla bean
6 medjool dates soaked in filtered water
3 cups fresh organic hulled strawberries
Blueberry Pie Milk
3 cups almond/Brazil nut milk
½ teaspoon sea salt (optional)
1/3 vanilla bean
4 medjool dates soaked in filtered water
1 cup fresh organic blueberries
Peach Parfait Milk
3 cups almond/Brazil nut milk
½ teaspoon sea salt (optional)
1/3 vanilla bean
4 medjool dates soaked in filtered water
2 cups fresh organic peaches
Orange Dream
2 cups almond/Brazil nut milk
1/3 vanilla bean
3 medjool dates soaked in filtered water
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1 teaspoon orange zest
• All of these can be frozen as popsicles.
• The dates used to sweeten these drinks can be reduced, as the child is accustomed to the alternative.
• Ground golden flax will give the nut milks a thick and creamy texture. Flax seeds are high in Omega 3 fatty acid, which is a nutrient missing from processed food and much, needed for a child’s developing brain. Use 2 teaspoons for 5 cups of nut milk. The addition of ground flax is not recommended if still using a bottle. A small amount of flax oil can be used for the omega 3.
• Turmeric can boost the antioxidants and give a richer creamy color without adding any flavor.
• Sea Salt is optional and is added in transitioning from cow’s milk, which is high in sodium. The sea salt should be transitioned out when the child is accepting the nut milk.
• Vanilla bean increases the nutrient potential of the nut milk and makes it tasty.Right now we have a special price on vanilla beans, click here to check it out.
• If feeding these milks through a bottle, strain through the nut bag again after adding dates and vanilla bean (fine particles can stop up the nipple).
Let me know if you have any other suggestions for feeding babies.

100% organic freshly juiced fruit is healthy, but contains too much concentrated fruit sugar. It is better to eat the whole fruit. Mixing some juice with water is better and getting children use to drinking plain filtered water is best. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 6 ounces of 100% fruit juice daily (can be divided into 3 ounces mixed with water X2). Lemonade has 6 teaspoons of Sugar per cup, and Sugar is not good for anyone. Many shelf stable fruit juices have sugar. Freshly juiced fruit is best. Introducing filtered water when a child is thirsty is a good way to get them use to drinking plain water. Carrying around a sippy cup with fruit juice never allows the child to be thirsty and constantly putting juice in their water or water in their juice will never get them use to drinking something that is not sweet. The sippy cup is best used just for transitioning from the bottle. When the child is older, let them self-serve by filling their glass with water any time they want. Using a jar of filtered water with a dispenser at a level they can reach makes it fun, and if it spills, it’s only water! 4 cups filtered water

(NaturalNews) Literally meaning "for life", probiotics are supplements that contain selected strains of friendly bacteria that assist our health.
Recent research shows that these live microorganisms provide a natural and simple way to ward off digestive disorders and colds in kids.
A last year study conducted by Italian scientists suggests that probiotic supplements containing Lactobacillus reuteri may help treat chronic
constipation in babies. The researchers led by Dr. Paola Coccorullo divided 44 infants that suffered from chronic constipation into two groups.
The first one was fed an inactive placebo, while the babies in the second group were assigned to take a dose of Lactobacillus reuteri mixed with drops of
fish oil.
After eight weeks, the infants taking probiotics experienced a significant improvement in their constipation. As a result, the frequency of their bowel
movements increased from less than three to almost five per week. " Because of their safety profile, probiotics may be an attractive option in the treatment of functional constipation," concludes the study.
Constipation isn't the only ailment that can be relieved by probiotics. Another Italian study has shown that Lactobacillus rhamnosus may ease
kids' belly aches. Dr. Ruggiero Francavilla and his team studied 141 children who were assigned either to Lactobacillus rhamnosus or a placebo. During the
treatment period, the scientists noticed that, on average, the frequencies of stomach aches fell from four to one per week. Plus, the kids experienced a
significantly lower level of pain.
If that wasn't enough, one study performed in China suggests that probiotics may also prevent
colds in children. The researchers found that children, who drank a mixture of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium animalis in
milk twice a day, required less Antibiotics to treat colds and the flu and recovered more quickly from illness. The reduction in symptom rates was
impressive - the children in test groups experienced fewer fevers (up to 72 percent), coughs (62%)
and runny noses (59%). Kids who took probiotics also missed less school than those who didn't.
Given recent research hinting at the therapeutic value of probiotics for the pediatric population, it becomes clear that gut health is as important for
small children as it is for adults. You can learn more about probiotics and how they affect our health by reading the articles below.

(NaturalNews) Piggybacking on the recent government announcement concerning overexposure to fluoride, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
has now announced that all infant formulas are contaminated with fluoride, and that when mixed with the fluoridated water provided in most US cities, the
combination is a toxic threat to babies and infants.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of all US children are overexposed to fluoride. Many of these children
are now afflicted with dental fluorosis as a result, which is a tooth disease involving the mottling and staining of enamel. In January, the CDC adjusted
the recommended recommended water fluoridation levels from 1.2 milligrams per liter (mg/L) to 0.7 mg/L ( http://www.naturalnews.com/030952_CDC_fluori...).
However, a 2009 study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association says that even the adjusted levels are too high, stating that
"[m]ost infants from birth to age 12 months who consume predominantly powdered and liquid concentrate formula are likely to exceed the upper tolerable
limit [of fluoride] if the formula is reconstituted with optimally fluoridated (0.7 - 1.2 ppm)."
Besides baby formulas and tap water, many other food items are also contaminated with toxic fluoride. Juices, crackers, breads, teas, and fruits often
contain high levels of fluoride. And since there is no verifiable way to know precisely how much fluoride children are ingesting from various food and
drinks, exposure is far more widespread than most people are aware.
"Exposure to excessive consumption of fluoride over a lifetime may lead to increased likelihood of
bone fractures in adults, and may result in effects on bone leading to pain and tenderness," says the US Environmental Protection Agency on its fluoride
information page.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has never properly tested fluoride for safety. It is the only unregulated, unapproved drug that is forcefully
injected into the water supplies of millions of people who have no choice in whether or not they are exposed to it. There is no justifiable reason why
fluoride is added to water, and there is no "safe" level of it.
Numerous studies have found, however, that fluoride exposure is linked to lowered IQ levels, mental retardation, thyroid dysfunction, bone
problems, the calcification of the pineal gland and other organs, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, gastrointestinal problems, kidney disease, respiratory
dysfunction, sexual disorders, cancer, and tooth decay ( http://www.naturalnews.com/fluoride.html).

(NaturalNews) Soy, once touted as a medical miracle, has been outed. Ninety-one percent of the soy we consume is tainted by the filth of the Genetically-Modified-Organisms machine,
literally the most quietly kept epidemic of our lifetime. Soy makes up a large portion of the diet for the chickens, pigs, and cows some of us eat. Even
the vegetarian/vegan community is exposed as a number of meat substitutes list soy as a main ingredient. Soy and soybean oil have wiggled their way into a
wide array of processed foods including salad dressings, peanut butter, tamari, mayonnaise, crackers, baby formula, baked good mixes, textured vegetable
protein, and the list goes on. So unless you are eating an organic version of any of the above, there is a good chance you are exposing yourself to GMO
soy.
Genetically engineered crops are destroying the environment, the health of indigenous communities, and ultimately our health as end of the chain consumers.
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has reported a number of studies. Their results? Frightening. Think major issues like infertility ( http://www.responsibletechnology.org/article...),
immune problems, accelerated aging, and even changes in the cellular structure of major organs ( http://www.responsibletechnology.org/). Also, as a result of the Antibiotic resistant
genes within GE food, they are the highly suspected culprits behind the new "superbug." The animals involved in the studies ended up deformed, sterile, and
dead.
Children are the most susceptible to these harmful effect, since they are constantly in a state of high growth; parents should take care. Genetically-Modified-Organisms foods, and
especially soy, have been tied to an increase in allergies, asthma, and a propensity to get antibiotic
resistant infections.
None of this would surprise any of the individuals in various South America countries that live near Genetically-Modified crops. South America is the world's largest
provider of soy (http://www.naturalnews.com/031382_GM_soy_GMO...).
A recent story in the UK Telegraph (
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/8...
) revealed that the herbicides used on GM soy are so toxic that direct contact often results in severe
illness and sometimes death. Petrona Villasboa is one of those that has faced direct loss. Her son was accidenatlly sprayed by one of the machines that are
often spraying Monsanto's Roundup on the surrounding crops. Silvino Talavera died that same day - and it was a horrible death (
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/8...
). That's not all - Non GMO farmers are being displaced, and those that stay run a calculated risk.
Mothers living close to Genetically-Modified farmland are twice as likely to have a fetus with a birth deformity.
The industry doesn't want this information out there. Monsanto provides over 90 percent of Genetically-Modified-Organisms soy seeds and related herbicides to farmers worldwide (
http://www.smdp.com/Articles-c-2011-05-08-71...
).
Agent Orange was one of Monsanto's first herbicides and the resulting effect to U.S soldiers and Vietnamese citizens was reprehensible( http://www.organicconsumers.org/monsanto/age...).
Scientist who push to hard to get a widespread scientific inquiry about the devastating effects of GE foods have had subtle and not-so-subtle pressure
applied and been forced to back off their findings ( http://www.responsibletechnology.org/article...).
Just as efforts are underway to assist these farmers in seeing the benefits of growing organic food as a
means of survival and commerce, the end consumer must also make a change. Soy purchases must be viewed in a whole new light. The best way to protect your
family from these potential harmful effects is to remove it from your diet or stick to strictly organic soy and organic processed foods.
(NaturalNews) Imagine parents who would put their children in danger, placing them in situations that could cause serious health problems and distress such
as difficulty breathing or a disruption of their male and female hormones -- or even shorten their kids' lives. We must be talking about psychopaths,
right? After all, most moms and dads would do anything to protect their offspring.
Unfortunately, without realizing it, countless parents who wouldn't consciously do anything to hurt their youngsters are unwittingly exposing their
children to dangerous, toxic chemicals in the home. The result could be health problems now and when the youngsters are grown, too.
As NaturalNews has extensively reported, you can't rely on the government to make sure the products you use in your home are safe for you or your kids,
either. In the U.S., for example, the FDA has done little except finally express "concern" over the powerful hormone disrupter bisphenol A (BPA), which is
found in a host of household goods, toys and food containers ( http://www.naturalnews.com/028567_BPA_oceans...).
Instead of feeling helpless in the face of so many household toxins that can threaten the health of children, the Canadian Partnership for Children's
Health and Environment (CPCHE), a coalition of Canadian environmental and health experts, has announced it's time for parents to get serious about the
potentially dangerous chemicals found in too many homes. And the good news is you can take five simple actions to avoid a chemical-laden home and safeguard
your children's health -- by keeping dust levels down, avoiding plastics, saying no to mercury
containing fish, using only green cleaners, and keeping pregnant women and youngsters away from home renovation areas.
"If parents take simple actions in these five areas, they can significantly reduce their children's exposures to toxins -- and even save money," Erica
Phipps, CPCHE Partnership Director, said in a media statement.
Dust from lead paint and chemicals including pesticide residue can be brought inside the home on shoes and clothes, get into the air and into the lungs.
But frequent wet mopping, vacuuming and dusting with a damp cloth can go a long way to keep toxic
substances out of the home.
"House dust is a major source of children's exposures to toxic substances including lead which, even at very low levels, is known to be harmful to
the developing brain,"
Prof. Bruce Lanphear of Simon Fraser University, a world-leading expert on children's environmental health who serves as an advisor to CPCHE, said in the
media statement.
The CPCHE experts also urge parents to go green when you clean. You'll save money, too, by getting
rid of toxic chemical cleaners and switching to simple, non-toxic cleaners including baking soda and vinegar. Also important: avoid the use of air
"fresheners" and use fragrance-free laundry detergents. Chemical "scents" used in these products have been linked to the disruption of normal hormone
function in youngsters. In addition, the CPCHE panel also advises against the use of antibacterial soaps.
Renovating your house? The CPCHE says it is crucial to keep pregnant women and children away from
areas being renovated to avoid exposure to contaminant-laden renovation dust and toxic fumes from products like paints, caulking and glues.
Another important way to protect health: avoid plastic products, especially when it comes to serving and storing food.
In fact, the CPCHE warns against using plastic containers or wrap in the microwave, even though the label reads "microwave safe", because chemicals
in the plastic can migrate into the food or beverage.
The group also calls for eating fresh and frozen foods whenever possible. this will reduce exposure to BPA which is used in the lining of most food and
drink cans. BPA is associated with a wide range of health problems, including harming the developing brain and disruption of endocrine function.
PVC, commonly called just plain vinyl, contains a class of chemical plasticizers known as phthalates that should also be avoided, especially by kids. Even
though phthalates are now banned from some children's toys, many other vinyl products are still on the market in some bibs, shower curtains and children's
raincoats. The safest solution? Throw away older toys and teething rings made of soft plastic.
If you serve your youngsters a lot of fish, you may also be serving them mercury, which is toxic to the brain. The CPCHE urges parents to do their homework
and only serve varieties of fish that are low in mercury -- such as Atlantic mackerel, herring, rainbow trout and wild salmon.
