(NaturalNews) New guidelines have been released that now recommend that mothers should breastfeed their babies for the first six months without adding any additional solid foods or formula. Experts from the World Health Organization support these new guidelines and this replaces previous guidelines that recommended adding solid foods or formula to a baby's diet at four to six months. This includes formulas and all solids foods (cereals, fruits, vegetables, meats, any other infant foods). The longer a woman breastfeeds her baby, the less chance the child will have of developing food allergies and other allergic reactions such as eczema and asthma. Breast milk is a great source of an immunoglobulin called secretory IGA. This ingredient effectively coats the intestines and keeps food allergens from entering the bloodstream.
The Many Benefits of Breastfeeding:
* fewer digestive problems
* fewer ear infections
* fewer allergies
The reason breastfed babies receive these health benefits is because breast milk contains antibodies that help babies fight off many illnesses. Exclusively breastfeeding for six months gives even better protection against gastrointestinal infections that often cause diarrhea.
* Studies have also shown that breastfed babies have IQs of at least 6.8 points higher. This has been connected to breast feeding.
* Breast fed babies also have another edge over formula fed babies in heart disease risk factors as adults. This is according to a study presented at the American Heart Association.
* Adults who were breast fed have lower body mass index (BMI) levels on average, and have higher HDL cholesterol levels than their formula-fed peers. Having higher HDL levels and a lower BMI is considered advantageous in avoiding cardiovascular disease.
* Breast feeding has also been shown to protect the mother against future breast cancer.
The Canadian Pediatric Society now states that in addition to not introducing babies to solid foods before six months, it is beneficial to breastfeed for up to two years and beyond. Health professionals struggle to get women to continue breastfeeding for longer durations. Less than 20% of mothers are now breast feeding for 6 months because the media bombards women with the commercialization of everything. The central message is that if you're a modern mom, you will formula feed and supplement.
Even when breast feeding, if an infant is fed solid foods (especially any that contain protein such as wheat, soy, and dairy) before the intestinal lining is mature, food allergens will seep into the bloodstream. This can cause the baby to build up antibodies to those allergens and later become sensitive to those foods. Mature intestines have a stronger ability to screen out these potential allergens and keep them from entering the bloodstream.
Breastfeeding is still the best choice of nutrition for babies between four and seven months. At this age a baby's intestinal lining goes through a developmental growth spurt known as "closure." This means that the intestinal lining becomes more selective about what to let through. By six to seven months of age a baby's body has the ability to filter out more of these offending allergens.
This illustrates why breast feeding is particularly important and why delaying solids is especially important if there is a family history of food allergies .
Introducing Solids When It Is Time:
* When solid foods are introduced, introduce the least allergic (lowest protein) foods first. This includes fruits, vegetables, and rice. Citrus fruits should be the last fruits introduced.
* Wait until at least eighteen months of age before introducing potentially-allergic foods. This includes foods such as egg whites, tomatoes, shellfish, and peanut butter.
* If you must introduce cow's milk products, wait until at least a year of age.
By one year of age, a child's intestines are mature enough to screen out most of the food allergens to prevent food allergies .

Breastfeeding Recommendations Have Been Changed
by: David Gutierrez
(NaturalNews) Women who were breastfed as infants have a lower risk of Breast Cancer as adults, according to a new study conducted by researchers from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and published in the journal Epidemiology.
"As a general group, women who reported they had been breastfed in infancy had a 17 percent decrease in Breast Cancer risk," researcher Hazel B. Nichols said. "However, we did not observe this reduction when we looked specifically among first-born women."
Some researchers have suggested that because toxins accumulate in the body fat of adult women - including in their breast milk - then infants who are breastfed may be exposed to more toxins and have a higher risk of cancer as adults. If this is true, then breastfed children of older women should have a higher cancer risk, as their mothers have had more time to accumulate toxins.
To test this possibility, the researchers interviewed 2,016 female Breast Cancer patients between the ages of 20 and 69, and 1,960 women who did not have the disease. They found that the women who had been breastfed as infants had a lower risk of breast cancer than the non-breastfed women.
Among the breastfed group, there was no effect on cancer risk from the mother's age at childbirth. In this same group, women who were born first had a higher cancer risk than women who had three or more older siblings.
When the researchers compared only firstborn women to each other, there was no difference in cancer rates between those who were breastfed and those who were not.
Among women who had not been breastfed, a mother's older age at childbirth corresponded to a lower cancer risk for the infant. There was no relationship found between cancer risk and birth order.
The results follow those of another recent study, conducted by British researchers and published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. This long-term observational study found that babies who were breastfed did not have an elevated cancer risk as adults, and that women who had been breastfed appeared to have a lower breast cancer risk.

It is the natural secretion designed to provide immediate nutrition at birth and long-term benefits for the remainder of life. Human biological development
is based on breast-milk as sustenance; it's the original nourishment of the human species.
Today's sad reality is that large numbers of people never drink their mother's milk. Oddly enough, they do drink other animals' milk throughout life by the
gallons.
Dairy- or soy-based infant formula is pushed by dominant corporations and unhesitatingly accepted by new parents and the medical community. Cow's milk is
often laced with Antibiotics , hormones, and other chemicals ingested by cattle. Most soy milk is produced from Genetically-Modified-Organisms seeds. Breast-milk provides nutrition
and immunity that are missing from these false substitutes.
In addition to nutrition via vitamins and minerals,
It contains the powerful substance
, which is most concentrated in the first milk produced (called

infant from infections, illness, and allergies.
If she does not breastfeed, the milk will dry up in about seven to ten days. Though it is biologically natural,
Lactation consultants, midwives/doulas, birthing centers, and other educational sources can provide the information and support necessary to successfully
breastfeed. The
may not latch-on immediately, but
Breast-feeding is also beneficial to the mother, as it decreases risks of high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol problems, and cardiovascular disease,
among others.
- respiratory illnesses,
- stomach viruses,
- gastrointestinal problems,
- ear infections,
- lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and
- some childhood cancers.
- Crohn's Disease,
- some lymphomas,
- multiple sclerosis,
- Type 1 and 2 diabetes, and
- breast/ovarian cancer.
The development of external immunity boosters (e.g., vaccines) occurred only in the past century, while breast-milk-developed immunity has occurred since

(NaturalNews) Is your child constipated, or showing signs of constipation? If so, you may want to do something about it, especially in view of the findings of recent research conducted at Nationwide Children's Hospital. The study found that the negative impact on children suffering from constipation as well as the costs associated with the ailment are roughly as significant as those for asthma and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Details of Study
The study team, comprising gastroenterologists and researchers from the hospital, used data from a survey which represented the national population. In particular, the team analyzed data of children aged under 18 who had been diagnosed with constipation or who were prescribed with laxatives for two years in a row (2003 and 2004), in a bid to ascertain their use of healthcare services and the costs they incurred.
Findings of Study
The study, to be published in The Journal of Pediatrics in early 2009, found that children who had constipation used healthcare services more than their counterparts who did not have the condition, to the tune of an additional $3.9 billion each year. However, despite the potential costs, both health-wise and financially speaking, constipation does not receive the same amount of health campaign publicity as other conditions like asthma and ADHD. And it is hoped that the findings of this study will help raise some awareness of the potential gravity of the condition.
"Despite being considered by many a relatively benign condition, childhood constipation has been shown to be associated with a significantly decreased quality of life. The day-to-day struggle caused by constipation can often be emotionally devastating, and can also have an impact on the overall health and well-being of affected children and their families," said Carlo Di Lorenzo, MD, head of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Nationwide Children's Hospital, the leader of the study.
About Constipation
And, hopefully, the increased awareness will also lead to more and earlier action on the part of parents. But before we go into that, a little more on constipation should be discussed.
What do you understand by constipation? Broadly speaking, most of us would take the condition to mean infrequent or difficult bowel movements, or both. But how infrequent should bowel movements be before one is considered constipated? That very much depends on whose point of view we are seeking.
Conventional medicine seems to think that it is within normal to go to the toilet once every couple of days. Indeed, this is stated on the National Institutes of Health website: "Some people think they are constipated if they do not have a bowel movement every day. However, normal stool elimination may be three times a day or three times a week, depending on the person."
In natural healing circles, however, many believe that our bowels should be moving at least once every day. In fact, some even state that, for optimal health, a person should be having a bowel movement for every main meal one consumes – that is at least two big toilet visits a day. Going by this definition, almost all of us would be considered constipated to some extent!
In debating this issue, let us exercise some common sense. Imagine having a meal, perhaps even a burger or a steak, and then not going to the toilet for the next 48 to 72 hours. That means that that meal you just had would be sitting in your intestines for at least that long. If that food had been left on the dinner table at room temperature, it would probably have gone bad during that time. Now, imagine it sitting in your warm innards, at body temperature. Many natural healers contend that that food would have putrefied in our bodies, releasing untold toxins for our systems to deal with!
Unblocking Constipation
If your child is having infrequent or difficult bowel movements, there are some natural remedies you could consider trying before you turn to pharmaceutical laxatives, which can have undesirable adverse effects.
The most obvious tip is to consume more fruits and vegetables. Refined foods and fast food tend to be constipating, and consumption of those items should be reduced, if not cut out altogether. Flaxseeds are great for relieving constipation, as is psyllium. These items are generally considered suitable for long-term use and, if taking them, one should ensure the intake of adequate amounts of water.
Prune juice is another effective option. And, if more push is needed, a supplement containing stimulating herbs such as senna leaves, cascara sagrada bark and aloe latex could be used; these plants contain chemicals which stimulate contraction of the bowel muscles.
Good bowel habits is critical for both short-term and long-term health, and taking steps toward it is something which all of us, and not just children, should attempt. There is a saying that "death begins in the colon", and there is surely good reason why it came about in the first place.

Childhood Constipation: A Bigger Health Problem Than We Think
How Media Drives Obesity in Children and Simple Counter
(NaturalNews) One the most important indicators of the state of health of Americans today may be the ever increasing rate of overweight and obese children. The Institute of Medicine has found that one-third of American children are either obese or at risk for obesity. The Center of Disease Control has found that, since 1980, the proportion of overweight children ages 6-11 has doubled and the number of overweight adolescents has tripled.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the increase in childhood obesity represents and unprecedented burden on children’s health. “If we don’t deal with children, this could be the first generation that will live sicker and die younger than its parents,” states Dr. James S. Marks, senior vice president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which recently announced an unprecedented effort to reverse childhood obesity epidemic by 2015.
Obesity or being overweight is not only harmful to the self-esteem and mental health of youngsters in a society that places such high value on thinness, but there are serious physical health concerns as well. According to Dr. Melissa A. Kalt, Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, overweight kids are set up for premature health risks such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even poor behavior in school like inattentiveness, disruptiveness, truancy, and low grade scores.
Some of the environmental factors that are thought to contribute to obesity are: over consumption of fast food, simple carbohydrates, soda, or other high calorie, high fat foods; larger and larger portion sizes; lack of exercise and/or more sedentary lifestyles; under consumption of whole foods, fruits and vegetables. However, what may be underlying all of these factors or at the very least exacerbating the issue is children and media.
Facts:
According to the Task Force on Media and Childhood Obesity of the Federal Communications Commission, children today spend many hours each day watching television and are influenced by the programming and advertising they see.
The Kaiser Family Foundation states that young children cannot distinguish between programming content and advertising.
The U.S. Congress, Children’s Television Act of 1990 reports, by the time the average child is 18 years hold, he or she has spent between 10,000 and 15,000 hours watching television and has been exposed to more than 200,000 commercials.
Once research study documents that obesity in children increases the more hours they watch television. (Crespo, 2001)
Another research study shows that children who watch more than three ours of television a day are 50 percent more likely to be obese than kids who watch fewer than two hours. (Tremblay, 2003)
Another researcher reports that children who use a lot of media have a lower activity level which is linked to a higher rate of obesity (Vandewater, 2004)
According to the 2004 report “The Role of Media in Childhood Obesity” by the Kaiser Family Foundation, “during the same period in which childhood obesity has increased so dramatically, there has also been an explosion in media targeted to children: TV shows and videos, specialized cable networks, video games, computer activities and Internet Web sites.” And “much of the media targeted to children is laden with elaborate advertising campaigns, many of which promote foods such as candy, soda, and snacks.”
The Advertising Coalition reports that $10-$15 billion is spent annually on kids’ food advertising.
One study documented approximately 11 food commercials per hour during children’s Saturday morning television programming, estimating that the average child viewer may be exposed to one food commercial every 5 minutes (Kotz, 1994)
Another study found that children’s food choices were significantly impacted by which ads they saw, i.e. either an ad for fruit or an ad for candy (Gorn, 1982)
Other researchers found that for each additional hour of television viewed per day, daily servings of fruits and vegetables decreased among adolescents possibly due to television advertising (Boynton-Jarret, R, 2003)
...
While many researchers and studies are still establishing the role of media in child obesity and overweight issues, (the direct link between advertising and obesity has not been officially established), the advertisers certainly know that TV ads can influence children’s and family consumer choices. For example, fast food outlets alone spend $3 billion in television ads targeted to children. And according to “Advertising, Marketing and the Media: Improving Messages from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, food and beverage advertisers collectively spend $10 billion to $12 billion a year to reach children and youth.
So, what’s a parent to do to counteract unhealthy advertisements and the big dollars behind them? Here a few pointers on helping children be more healthy and fit:
First, educate them on the factors contributing to being overweight or obese:
1. Too much “fat foods” (fast foods, simple carbs, soda, energy drinks, cereal etc.)
2. Larger than life portion sizes
3. Not enough movement or exercise
4. Not enough whole foods (fruits, vegetables, whole wheat bread, whole grains etc.)
Second, reduce poor food choices in the home. Refuse to buy the sodas and Sugar cereals or insist that these only be indulged in after a healthy meal.
Third, make whole food choices easy for them to prepare (i.e. pre washed, cut up fruits and veggies; oatmeal; smoothies; whole wheat bread; pre-cooked healthy snacks/meals like cubed chicken breast, string cheese, hard-boiled eggs, in single serving size containers. Make it tasty and easy (see green smoothie recipe below).
Fourth, encourage them to exercise (i.e. refuse to drive them to school; sign them up for sports; play with them outdoors; get a dog and go for daily walks). Make it fun.
Fifth, limit television hours per day. And teach them how they can mute the commercials or “tevo” the show and fast forward through the commercials.
And finally, teach them that being fit and healthy means eating healthy foods and exercising, in direct contrast to how television shows and advertisements portray super skinny people eating chips and drinking soda, it's just not true. And educate them on the fact that advertisers make their money by portraying beautiful people eating junk food.
EASY, YUMMY recipe for “green smoothies”:
Give Your Kids a Great Dose of Fresh, Raw Servings of Fruits and Vegetables
(shhhhh, tastes so good, your kids won't even know there is spinach in there!)
1. Put about 2 cups water in the blender
2. Add a few handfuls of spinach or kale or chard, blend until smooth
3. Add fruit, 1-2 bananas and 1-2 C frozen blueberries or mixed berries or fruit etc.
4. If you must, add a small amount of sweetener of choice.
5. Smoothie will be purple and yummy and you’d never know there were healthy greens hiding in the mix, ENJOY!
(Go for a green smoothie over a soda! Children who drink just one soft drink a day are 60 percent more likely to become obese, according to a 2001 study by Harvard University and Boston Children’s Hospital.)

How Media Drives Obesity in Children and Simple Counter Tactics
Obesity in children has been a growing problem for some time now. The surprising issue isn't obesity itself, but rather the lack of any real solution for the problem. It isn't for lack of trying either. Did you know that over $1 billion dollars a year is spent on government nutrition education programs? With this amount of money being spent, you'd like to feel secure in knowing that a dent in the obesity rate in children is occurring. However, the opposite seems to be the reality. An Associated Press review of 57 government nutrition education programs found overwhelming failure when viewed against the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. In some cases, the children became even less willing to eat good food by the end of the program. The fact of the matter is, it isn't any one reason. The current solutions being presented to our children are based on the premise that isolated actions will have an effect. When you really look at this approach, you'll realize it's nonsense. What kind of impact can a video of a dancing piece of broccoli have when the vending machine in school sells Snickers and M&M's? The reality is that we need a whole solution approach. Hillary Clinton may not have been so far off when she said, "It takes a village."
How can $1 billion dollars not only produce no positive effect, but possibly be creating a negative effect? It's difficult to say exactly why, but pundits have certainly chimed in with their theories as why the programs have failed. Some of the popular beliefs include:
A real world example of this is the town of Somerville, MA. Professor Christina Economos, a professor at Tufts University, wanted to find out what would happen if the whole community got involved in the war against fat. The result? A town where kids opt for healthy options before fattening ones. The entire community came together and made changes on all fronts including repainting crosswalks and hiring more crossing guards to encourage more walkers, replacing unhealthy options in school cafeterias with healthier ones and asking restaurants to serve healthy portion options.
The changes this town made can serve as a great model for your own family. A thought to mull over from Economos: "I think people are starting to understand that to affect health, it's not just individual education and behavior change, it's creating healthy environments." What can you do create a healthy environment in your home or town?

(NaturalNews) Most mothers know that breast milk is best for baby, but there are some people who, perhaps for health reasons, need to find a safe alternative. In many instances, these moms look for an organic infant formula and are willing to pay top dollar to give their babies the best possible nutrition. Sadly, just because an infant formula is given the "organic" label doesn't necessarily mean that it is healthy.
For example, a recent article in The New York Times revealed that the organic version of Similac infant formula is sweetened with cane Sugar (sucrose) and is much sweeter than other infant formulas. While all infant formulas have some added sugars to aid in the digestion of proteins, other organic products use sugars like organic lactose, which is presumably a better match for what's found in breast milk and doesn't have the sweetness of sucrose. Most health-conscious readers are probably shaking their heads and thinking that it is nothing short of insanity to be adding Sugar to baby formula when the U.S. is in the middle of an obesity epidemic. Were pediatricians actually consulted about what was put into this formula? Or was the product designed primarily by food chemists like the ones that create fast food strawberry milkshakes?
According to a list of frequently asked questions on the FDA website, the FDA currently does not approve infant formula before it can be marketed. The FDA does require that infant formula contain minimum amounts of certain nutrients, and it does provide upper limits for some nutrients. Certain nutrients that are required to be included in any infant formula are protein, fat, linoleic acid, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, thiamin (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), vitamin B6, vitamin B12, niacin, folic acid, pantothenic acid, vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, iodine, sodium, potassium and chloride. If cow's milk is not used for the formula, then biotin, choline and inositol must be included.
Any substance that is generally recognized as safe may be used in infant formula in the United States. For now, that means that Sugar can be used in baby formula in the U.S., and there is absolutely no upper limit to the amount of sugar that can be dumped into it. Europe, on the other hand, in light of the childhood obesity epidemic, has banned all sucrose from baby formula products beginning in 2009.
According to the The New York Times article, Dr. Benjamin Caballero, director of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, doesn't think sucrose belongs in infant formula, either. Dr. Caballero believes that feeding children sweet things encourages them to eat more. He explains that babies and children generally prefer sweeter foods and will eat more of them than foods that aren't as sweet.
While having babies eat more might be of interest to food corporations, parents need to be concerned with the health of their children. Concerns about obesity aren't the only problem with putting sugar in baby formula. If a baby's teeth are constantly exposed to sugar, this could result in tooth decay.
Clearly, finding a safe infant formula is a daunting task. According to The Breastfeeding Task Force of Greater Los Angeles, there are many risks associated with using infant formula instead of breast milk. For example, formula feeding is responsible for up to 26% of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in children. Middle-ear infections are three to four times more common in children who are fed infant formula, and children who are fed infant formula are also much more likely to be hospitalized due to bacterial infections. In addition to the health risks, some studies have shown that formula-fed babies don't do as well on intelligence tests as breast-fed babies.
Moreover, sugar isn't the only undesirable thing turning up in infant formula. An NPR report indicates that certain formulas enhanced with omega-3 fatty acids may actually pose a health risk. Other reports warn about Bisphenol-A turning up in infant formulations. What is a new mother to do?
Maybe new moms should take a lesson from the animal kingdom. What other mammals feed their babies the milk of other creatures? Do dogs try to feed their puppies cat milk? Of course not. Even small children know that cat milk is for kittens, just like cow's milk is for baby cows. Perhaps the perfect formula for a baby just isn't something that can be found in a can.

Organic Similac: Formula for Obesity?
(NaturalNews) There's nothing more precious than a new baby. Nine months pass so quickly, as you excitedly look forward to the day when you are finally holding that sweet little bundle in your arms. In the first few months of life, your baby communicates by crying to let you know when he has a need such as being hungry, needing a diaper change, feeling scared, lonely, cold, sick or bored. There may be times when you take care of every possible need, and your baby continues to cry. You feel helpless as you frantically phone your pediatrician. Normally after examining your baby, the doctor tells you that your baby has a case of colic. (Of course, if there is ever a doubt about the health of your baby, please contact your pediatrician.)
Although not all babies experience colic, only about one in five, some babies develop a strong case of it around three weeks old. Colic is described as pain in the abdomen resulting from trapped gas in the digestive tract of your little one. Usually the result is excessive crying. A case of colic may continue off and on until your baby reaches about four months. Signs include loud crying, clenched hands, flexing arms and legs that are drawn up tightly against his abdomen. His little tummy may seem hard and he may suffer from a large amount of gas. It's horrible to watch this little helpless person cry out in pain.
While there is no perfect cure for colic, some parents have found temporary relief for their baby, using these natural health approaches. Swaddle your baby by wrapping him snugly in a warm blanket. Support him with his tummy up against the inside of your forearm with his back against your side. The slight pressure against his mid-section may help. If your baby takes a pacifier, be sure you have one handy especially during his colicky moments. Are you a nursing mother? If so, be careful of the food you eat. Spicy or gassy foods may add to his colicky symptoms. Your diet affects the milk you produce. Be sure to burp your baby well after he eats. This will help to expel unwanted air from his tummy. Keep your little one away from drafts or wind. Sooth him with gentle soft music. Try adding a tiny drop of pure peppermint extract to a teaspoon of water. Slowly spoon this warm mixture into the baby's mouth. A small amount of weak Chamomile tea water may also help to calm your baby's tummy trouble. (Be sure not to add Sugar or honey as a baby's digestive system is not ready to digest these items.) Placing your baby in a warm bath and sponging warm water over his tummy area may also be of benefit.
Remaining calm and being willing to try out different techniques for relieving your baby's colic, will allow you to bond with your little one in a special way. Remember you are his world and he needs you. His colic won't last forever and one day soon, that sad little face will reward you with a beautiful little smile.

Find Natural Relief for Colic
by: Sheryl Walters, citizen journalist
(NaturalNews) Colic is defined as inconsolable crying in an infant for as least three hours a day, at least three days a week, for at least three weeks. A colicky baby typically presents with a loud piercing cry, flexed legs, tensed abdominal muscles, and clenched fingers. It typically starts around three weeks of age and lasts until around three months but sometimes lasts for as long as six months. Approximately 10-20% of babies are affected by colic. Doctors diagnose colic based on the previously mentioned "Rule of 3" and after ruling out diseases that may make a baby cry uncontrollably. Parents of infants with colic report significantly higher stress levels than parents whose babies don't have colic. The stress and frustration of trying to soothe a colicky baby may interfere with mother-baby bonding and can increase the risk of postpartum depression. In addition, colicky babies are more likely to be victims of child abuse and shaken baby syndrome. Despite the research done on colic there is no known cause, which can make treatment difficult. Chiropractic care has shown some of the best results, with 94% of colicky babies demonstrating improvement with chiropractic adjustments.
Research on chiropractic care and colic has shown significant benefits over other treatments such as dietary changes, medication, and infant positioning. A randomized clinical trial published in 1999 in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics found that "Spinal manipulation is effective in relieving infantile colic". For this study the researchers randomly assigned infants diagnosed with colic into two groups. One group received chiropractic care for two weeks and the other group was given the anti-gas medication dimethicone for two weeks. The babies in the chiropractic group showed a 67% decrease in crying while the babies on medication showed a 38% decrease in crying.
Another study with 316 children also showed significant improvement in colic in response to chiropractic care. This prospective study used diaries from mothers of colicky babies to track the amount of crying. The three month long study showed a "satisfactory result of spinal manipulative therapy in 94% of the cases". The improvements occurred after an average of only three adjustments within two weeks.
Chiropractic care is a conservative, gentle, and very successful option for treating infants with colic. Chiropractic adjustments for infants are specific, gentle, and safe. (NaturalNews) If nothing you do seems to calm your baby`s chronic crying, you may have a serious case of colic on your hands. But a new study from the University of Texas is trying to get to the "gut" of the colic cause. The study says gut bacteria may be responsible for chronic crying.
While colic is a fairly normal thing for many babies - approximately 25 percent of all babies are affected by it - its normalcy is no consolation to its victims. Its effects are no picnic for the baby, nor for the nerves of anyone within earshot of the little one`s tirade.
Worst of all? Virtually nothing`s able to quell the crying, not even medicinal products sold over-the-counter or by prescription.
The cause of colic has confounded doctors for years. Theories about its cause abound; some suggesting it`s simply a case of overt gastrointestinal discomfort, while others say colicky babies are nothing more than angry babies dressed in sheep`s clothing (i.e. Colic doesn`t exist).
However, the problem may have its roots in the baby`s stomach.
All of us are crawling with bacteria. It sound gross, but the bacteria we breed are essential to our survival, particularly the bacteria that live in our digestive tract. And according to the aforementioned University of Texas scientists, the more bacteria a baby has, the better off he or she is in avoiding colic - provided it`s the right kind of bacteria.
When a team of researchers from the U of T`s School of Medicine analyzed the gut bacteria of 36 babies, 18 of which had colic, they found that the colicky babies were more likely to have less variegated bacteria in general and a more specific bacterium called klebsiella.
Klebsiella is a common intestinal bacterium that`s found in about 40 percent of all human and animal intestinal tracts.
Inside of the intestinal wall, the klebsiella bacterium typically does its normal thing, like maintaining proper colon health. If it escapes the intestines, though, it can become an extremely deadly pathogen - 90 percent of people infected with it wind up dead if left untreated. And while it`s a typically benign bacterium, it can cause various diseases when under certain conditions.
It is this bacterium that researchers believe may be the cause of colic, as it seems to signal an inflammatory reaction within a baby`s intestinal tract similar to those seen in adults with irritable bowel syndrome.
The study is published in the Journal of Pediatrics.
The question everyone wants answered, of course, is not how colic is caused but rather how parents can treat it. But just as theories abound as to its cause, so too do its treatments.
Doctors often prescribe infant formulas, but no one formula has proven to be much of an elixir. Natural treatments abound as well, like anise seeds, highly heralded for their ability to settle an unsettled stomach.
Researchers believe the answer may lie in probiotics, which are microorganisms found primarily in yogurt that helps promote "good" bacteria within the intestine. You can learn more about probiotics and all they have to offer in some of the past postings here on Natural News.
The University of Texas researchers plan on probiotic testing on colicky conditions in future analysis, but not before probiotics are first tested on humans with digestive disorders that may or may not involve the klebsiella bacterium.

(NaturalNews) There is no scientifically defined cause for infantile colic -- a behavioral syndrome in which an otherwise healthy baby cries frequently and inconsolably for an extended period for no discernable reason -- but a new study published in the January issue of Pediatrics found that a daily dose of a certain probiotic helped improve colic symptoms. Researchers from the University of Turin randomly gave 83 infants either a daily dose of probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri 30 minutes after feeding, or simethicone, a pharmaceutical control. After 7 days, the scientists reported that the average crying times of the probiotic infants were down 21 percent, from 197 minutes a day to 159 minutes a day, according to the mothers, while the crying times of the control group were only reduced by 10 percent; from 197 minutes per day to 177. After 28 days, the crying times had dropped 75 percent (51 minutes per day) for the probiotic group and 26 percent (145 minutes per day) for the control group. "In our cohort, L reuteri improved colicky symptoms in breastfed infants within 1 week, compared with simethicone, which suggests that probiotics may have a role in ... infantile colic," reported lead researcher Francesco Savino. The researchers report that the exact mechanism by which the benefits were achieved is not clear. The theory is that the probiotics may have an anti-inflammatory effect on the intestines, which might subsequently modify immune responses and gut movement. There are some limits to the study: It was an open, non-blind trial with different doses given to each group. Additionally, simethicone is not a true placebo, but rather a commonly used colic treatment, and Savino said that all participants were breastfed, so the effect of the probiotic on colicky formula-fed infants is not known. "Because this is the first study performed to evaluate the efficacy of probiotic agents for colicky infants, additional research, from clinical observation to microbiologic analysis, is needed to confirm the beneficial effects of L reuteri," the researchers wrote. "Moreover, because specific probiotic strains have specific properties and targets in the human intestinal microbiota, exerting different health effects, additional studies might be performed to examine the role of other probiotic species and to identify the ideal strain for ... infantile colic." Probiotic bacteria are most often found in foods in the refrigerated areas of the grocery store -- heat can destroy the bacteria -- in dairy products such as yogurt. Up to 28 percent of newborn babies experience colic, said the report, and it is a common issue within the first three months of life for an infant.
Children who lead acidic inactive lifestyles are five-to-six times more likely to be at serious risk of heart dis-ease, with that degree of danger emerging as early as their teenage years, according to a new study by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The findings, published Friday (April 4) in the open access journal Dynamic Medicine, looked at a group of children twice - first while in grade school, then again seven years later when they were in their teens.
Researchers wanted to know more about the early onset of dietary and metabolic acid syndrome, an acidic condition more commonly found in adults. Dieatry and metabolic acidic syndrome is the label given to a clustering of acidic conditions that raise the risk of heart dis-ease and diabetes, such as glucose intolerance, hypertension, elevated triglycerides, low HDL (so-called "good") cholesterol and obesity. Previous studies have found that somewhere from four percent to nine percent of adolescents have the condition.
However, until now, no one had tracked the same group of children over time to see just how fitness and activity levels in their early years played a role in the likelihood of them developing dietary and metabolic acidic syndrome by the time they were teenagers, according to Robert McMurray, professor of exercise and sports Science in the department of exercise and sports Science in UNC's College of Arts and Sciences.
The study looked at data from almost 400 children between the ages of seven and 10 from across North Carolina. Researchers measured factors such as height, body mass, percentage body fat, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Participants were also surveyed about their physical activity and given an aerobic fitness test.
When the same children were examined again seven years later, 4.6 percent had three or more characteristics of dietary and metabolic acid syndrome.
McMurray said adolescents with the syndrome were six times more likely to have had low aerobic fitness as children and five times more likely to have low levels of physical activity at the time they joined the
study.
For example, as children, those who had low levels of physical activity got no vigorous exercise (such as playing basketball or soccer) and spent less than 20 minutes a day doing moderate-intensity physical activity (walking briskly, riding a bike at a medium speed). That means that at best, they were getting just one-third of the 60 minutes a day that is currently recommended for children by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"This shows efforts need to begin early in childhood to increase exercise," he said. "Children today live a very sedentary life and are prone to obesity. This is the first study to examine the importance of
childhood fitness levels on your metabolism as a teenager.
Previously we didn't know if low fitness levels were an influence."
"It's obvious now that there is a link and this is something which we need to pay attention to by encouraging our kids to keep fit, or suffer the consequences later in life," said McMurray.
According to Dr. Robert O. Young, a research scientist at the pH Miracle Living Center, stated, "dietary and metabolic acidic syndrome is a name of several conditions, including hypertension, diabetes and obesity caused by poor lifestyle and dietary choices. If you want to be healthy and fit you have to alkalize and exercise your body every day. The best way to maintain the alkaline design of the body and prevent the conditions of dietary and metabolic acidic syndrome is with the pH Miracle Lifestyle and Diet."

Question from Ila:
My grandson (18 months, 29 lbs) doesn't sleep well and has an ear infection (7th this year) and Antibiotics are always prescribed. Is there an alternative to heal it or even to prevent them and anything to help him sleep better? (His parents are getting sleep deprived and short tempered!)
Place the garlic in a large jar and use sufficient olive oil to completely cover the garlic; shake and allow to stand in a moderately warm place for two to three days; strain through unbleached muslin or cotton; bottle and keep in a cool place.
(NaturalNews) Recent studies have shown that children growing up with pets, living on farms, or in any way exposed to certain bacteria at young ages show stronger immune systems and less likelihood of developing severe allergies.
Results from a nationally conducted survey by the National Institute of Health (NIH) from 1988 to 1994 indicate that more than 50 percent of Americans aged six to fifty-nine are sensitive to at least one allergen. These rates range from two to five times higher than rates found in a similar survey completed in 1980.
The apparent reason for these increased rates is today’s more sterile lifestyle. The body’s immune system is formed in reaction to foreign, generally harmless substances such as animal dander, pollen, mold, and particular foods. The more our lifestyle protects us from encounters with such substances, the greater the chance for a reaction when they are finally encountered.
Another study, from the 2002 Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) finds that exposure to farm animals or pets at an early age could help children avoid developing allergies. This study found that children raised without pets are more likely to develop allergy related diseases than were children frequently exposed to animals during their first years of life.
This study also found that in the past when families tended to be larger, children had fewer allergies. Today’s children, raised in smaller families, have fewer siblings and are therefore exposed to fewer germs.
Studies conducted with rats have shown that rats and mice living in sewers and on farms have stronger immune systems than lab rats that live in a clean environment.
food allergies are also on the rise, occurring in up to 8 percent of children under four years of age, and 4 percent of adults. food allergies can have serious consequences including anaphylactic shock and death. The largest rise in allergies involves peanuts. Peanut allergies were virtually unknown several years ago when peanuts were a popular snack at circuses and carnivals.
For the past several years, theories have been purposed regarding the effects of our sanitized world on our immune systems. However, the development of more and more products for use in the cleaning of our environments has continued. We have been taught by advertisers that the goal of every housekeeper should be a house that is completely germ free and sterile. We have bought into the idea that no matter how many toxic ingredients are contained in these products, they should be used in our homes and workplaces to keep us healthy. Now it appears that the most toxic effect of these products may be to our immune systems.

Early Exposure To Bacteria Helps Create Stronger Immune Systems

(NaturalNews) Have you noticed that your baby gets completely absorbed when looking at bright colors? Vibrant colors stimulate learning and development. Research shows that making your baby’s plate of food as colorful as the mobile hung above his/her bed is the best way to ensure your child is getting all the nutrients needed to begin eating solid food.
Why eat a rainbow?
Here’s why the rainbow approach works best for baby’s first foods:
•Starting your baby out on brightly colored fruits and vegetables that the child can connect with visually can make this process exciting and stimulating for both of you.
•Nutritional experts agree that fruits or vegetables are the perfect foods for making this transition, since they contain vitamins, minerals, and other nourishment essential for your baby’s wellbeing.
•Brightly colored fruits and vegetables are also packed with antioxidants, which will help your baby defend him/herself against pollution and other environmental toxins. Intensely colored plants have more of these protective antioxidants than paler ones do.
•Each color provides different nutrients and antioxidants, which work synergistically together.
So the best way to ensure that your whole family, including your baby is getting all of nutrition they need is to feed them a range of colorful fruits and vegetables.
Good first foods
As less milk is given, food becomes a more essential part of their nourishment. When babies first begin to eat, they consume very little, so slowly build up the amount of different colors that you offer them.
•It doesn’t matter whether you start your child out on fruit or vegetables. Here are some bright ideas:
•Peaches, bananas, pears, green beans, carrots and squash are good beginning foods.
•If they tried a dazzling green zucchini last week, try giving them a radiant orange carrot this week so that your child has access to a growing range of nourishment.
•Mash some avocado into a sweet potato, to mix up two varieties of colorful food
•Blend up some blueberries, bananas and strawberries for vibrant hues.
•Bright green broccoli makes excellent finger food as it has a built in handle, and it is packed with nutrition.
•Once your baby has developed their pincer grip, sweetcorn kernels and peas make great nibbles
Good Habits
Introducing these healthy plants that are filled with vitality at an early age is also getting your child into good habits and making them aware of how delicious these foods are. Even if they decide later that they don’t like all fruit and vegetables (as some children do,) at least you know that those first few years their bodies were enjoying optimum nutrition.
Furthermore, feeding your baby a range of nature’s lovely colors can make the transition to solids fun and stimulating. After all, babies are attracted to bright colors and will delight in a plate full of nutritious, vibrantly colored food.

Feeding Your Baby a Rainbow of Nutrition
Do You Make This Common Mistake When Your Child is Sick?
However, fever is actually a signal that an immune system is working well and in older children who do not appear to be particularly distressed, fever is a positive sign. It is evidence that the child has an active immune system. Fever does not harm your brain or your body, although it does increase your need for fluids. Parents are not the only people who may become overly concerned, however, according to the New York Times: "Other studies have looked at attitudes among medical personnel, who can be just as worried about fever as parents ... Some of the phobia 'comes from doctors and nurses.'"
