21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
Wow, without over intellectualizing it and diving into a deep theological explanation using a dozen questionably interpreted obscure scriptures to "demonstrate" what it means through carnal interpretation, Lord Jesus the Living Word of God simply interprets the parable here... and treasure in heaven is another aspect of the "pearl of great price" and we begin to enjoy part of this treasure here on earth with the kingdom of heaven being within us.
22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Jesus woo'd him into the fullness of what He has to offer, but in this man's free will, he was too attached to what he had and rejected this amazing offer which was far more beautiful than the man was able to begin to fathom. In the same way, most people today reject this offer including the vast majority of those within mainstream christianity. Perhaps what he rejected (and what the majority reject today) is the invitation to be one of the Lord's many disciples of which i believe there are perhaps at least 5 or 10 million today in the world, only 82 (70+12) having been mentioned at one point before the explosion, a large part of which began at pentacost when the 120 in the upper room were baptized with the Holy Spirit and with fire and 3000 were saved that very day.
I believe this rejection by the rich ruler of the full identity we can have in Christ is what Revelations chapter 3 refers to as "lukewarm", the Laodician church and i also believe (know with an abundance of evidence actually) that what Lord Jesus gave to the disciples then, He has given to the disciples today and all throughout church history, His millions of disciples each being living epistles, each with amazing testimonies of His glory to tell, starting with their own baptism in the Holy Spirit story. Disciples today are walking in the authority to heal the sick and cast out demons, the identical authority the Lord had given to the original 12 and 70 and walk in many other fruits, gifts and blessings, the love of Christ pouring through their surrendered lives, peace that passes all understanding, joy unspeakable and many others.
Whether this rich ruler has salvation or not, possibly a lukewarm salvation if such a thing exists and if so, then with far fewer treasures in heaven, both now and later, he is saying no to the fullness of what Lord Jesus has for him, saying no to truly making Jesus Lord of his life, giving Jesus everything... that Jesus would in return give him everything, blessings, fruits and gifts beyond what he had ever dreamed.
Revelation 3: 16 So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.
Notice the following verse which speaks specifically to the rich ruler and to those like him who believe they have all they need today and don't want to sell it all for deeper intimacy with Jesus, the pearl of great price:
17 Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked,
18 I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.
All of the above comes through surrendering our lives to Him, asking Him to destroy our flesh, to refine, purify, consecrate and sanctify us... rejecting and renouncing every sin even at the thought level, repenting immediately of any sin even in our thoughts, asking Him consistently to fill us with His precious Spirit, determining to live only as led by this Spirit. When we have our acts chapter 2 baptism in the Holy Spirit experience which is available to all of us, the will to resist sin by His Spirit actually becomes possible.
19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. 21 He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”
This rich ruler is representative of the majority of people in the mainstream church today, genuine seekers to a limited extent, but who choose not to go all the way in Christ, all of whom could decide with their own free will to truly surrender all to Jesus, but choose not to, one reason being that they are lied to that this is not possible, that it can only happen by going about our business and waiting for God to "do it all for us", also known as eliminating our free will and forcing it upon us. We determine to seek Him, to fall more deeply in love with Him, to live holy unto Him as branches attached to the Vine and only then with our free will are we are inviting Him to envelope us in His Spirit.
The Lord's yoke is easy and his burden is light, easiest and lightest the more fully we surrender our lives to Him. “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest". "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink". "... unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you". To receive the fullness of what Jesus has for us, we need to come to Him and we need to drink living water, we need to eat His flesh and drink His blood. This is not referring to a once a month metaphorical communion with a cracker and grape juice, it is something we as His disciples do every second of every day. We are immersed in Him, immersed in His love and in a love for Him. As in the example of the rich ruler, God does not interfere with our free will and force us to choose to go deeper with Him. He has given us a part in it and it is a decision that each of us ourselves must make. Will we surrender our lives fully to Him or will we not? With the free will given to us by the living God, we can choose to sell all that we own to buy the pearl of great price or to hold on to what we have and give up the pearl.
You didn't answer my questions. Have you been perfect? Have you sold ALL your possessions?
Dear Vektek,
In giving up all i have given up (distractions, sin, religion of man, false doctrines of man, desire for holding popular opinions within mainstream christianity even if they are false, etc), i believe i have met and even exceeded what Jesus has required of me to buy the pearl of great price (I have bought mine!) and I believe the more that we give up, the more He blesses us with deeper relationship with Him (this pearl can become even more beautiful and valuable, think "rewards judgement").
I don't believe i have been "perfect" by what we normally mean when we say perfect, but i believe i have been perfect in the eyes of Jesus as to what He asks and that He is deeply pleased with me. Have i sold all my possessions as in my laptop and my blender?, no. But then nor am i a literal branch having attached myself to a literal Vine, though i have certainly done so figuratively.
And why just 90% of your free time MST? Why not 100% percent? You're slacking! :)
Yes, i must be :). I believe 90% of our free time directly sowing into a deepened love for Jesus is enough for us to break through and be ushered into the kingdom of heaven (which is within us and which begins now on earth). This is not to say that we wouldn't continue to abide in Him with our heart connected to His in the other 10%, we certainly would. Myself i sow directly to the Spirit in a higher %, but i recommended 90% as something that would be a spectacularly dramatic shift for the vast majority and it would be noticed by the Living God as some serious asking, seeking and knocking. If somebody looks up a recipe or watches a funny video in 10% of their free time, i believe the Lord is perfectly ok with this. The principle is that our first love becomes the Living God and a desire to sit in His beautiful presence, seeking to love Him deeper, seeking His voice and His leading and sowing into deepened intimate relationship with Him. Let the seeker do this for 3 days (or maybe 7?) and see if s/he hasn't developed a new love for it and no desire to go back. We have a choice as to how fast or how slow we decide to run towards Him and He does take notice and richly blesses the deep seeker who wishes to break through into a deepened love for Him. Those with eyes to see, please let them see.
