Hey everyone. I just wanted to post an update for everyone.
Let me begin by saying that I am almost 2 1/2 years post Mirena, and I am doing far better than I once was. I'm not at 100%....I may never be....but I am much better. I can only pray that I continue to improve.
Here's my latest experience. I had about four months where I was feeling great, and then, in October, I had a relapse of some sort that lasted about 10 days. It wasn't as bad as those crashes that you have in that first year to year and a half, but it was still scary. Had a hard time thinking, my hands wouldn't work as well as I needed them to, my hands and arms were very weak, and I had a lot of issues with that feeling that I couldn't get in enough air when I would breathe (so I would have to huff in these big gasps of air). Anyway, my post-Mirena blog discusses everything that happened with all of that.
Here's where I am now, though. During that time, I had my blood drawn, and I found that I was vitamin D deficient. I was told to increase my vitamin D to take an extra 2000 units per day. I did it religiously for the months following. Over the past three months (since that crash in October), I have been feeling good. I just didn't know if it was because of the increase in the vitamin D or if it was just not time to have another relapse yet.
Well....I had my blood drawn again about two weeks ago to find out that my vitamin D levels have not changed a single point...not even with the extra supplementation. For whatever reason, my body isn't absorbing it. So, my doc wants me to start taking a prescription strength vitamin D twice a week, and each pill is 50,000 units! That seems awfully high. I haven't started doing it yet, though, because there can be some pretty nasty effects of vitamin D toxicity, and my mother is coming out to visit me next week. I figure that I will wait until she is here just in case it makes me sick and I need a little extra help.
I'm still trying to decide if it is a good idea to take 100,000 units of vitamin D a week. Have any of you taken that much? The idea here is that, hopefully, the extremely high amount will shock my system a bit into finally being able to absorb the vitamin D again, and eventually, I will be able to take the extra 2000 units per day successfully. He says that, once my body figures out how to absorb it, I will need to take it for the remainder of my life. I'm fine with that. I am just praying that I will be able to get my body to even absorb/accept it.
I'm interested to hear if anyone of you have dealt with this....having your body not change in its vitamin D level even after supplementation, and if any of you have had to take such a huge amount. This is my GP that wants to do this, but Dr. J. doesn't think it is a good idea because of the fact that this vitamin D will be synthetic, and he thinks those levels are way too high.
Interested to hear from you. Thanks, ladies!
