First I have to state how happy I am that I found this forum. I really thought it was just me with my problem. I have been living with this problem for a couple of years now and I think it is starting to effect different aspects of my life.
My problem is with a smell that eminates from my rectum. I have tried to troubleshoot my body by eliminating different things from my diet/lifestyle and nothing has worked. For the last year I have tried to hide the odor by using powders and deodorants on my rectum to make it though the day. The problem is that even after a shower I still smell. The more active I am during the day the worse it gets. I hear people taking a big breath of air through their nose as I walk by or when people at my employment have to work in close proximity of me. People use the word "smell" in a sentence and I get paranoid because I always think there is a hidden joke amongst others. Friends/coworkers have made comments that I know were directed at my smell but I always play dumb. I sit in the corner of meetings to hopefully avoid people smelling me. At parties in my own home I have to stand to the side, hoping that my friends will keep walking by because I know if they stop to talk that they will smell the odor.
I have been fighting this for so long that I think I am becoming depressed. Believe me it is hard for me to admit that I am depressed because I have always thought of it as a sign of weakness. It is effecting my home life and work life. It is rare that I am truely happy anymore. Because of the Depression I started to workout at a gym back in January, hoping it would lift my spirits, but it hasn't worked. I have read some of the threads here and there are many different remedies that people suggest. This has confused me as I don't know what direction to go in. I want to get rid of this once and for all so that I can live life the way I used to, rid myself of depression, so my kids won't think of me as the grumpy dad when they grow up. I am misserable because of this smell, please help!

If your problem centers on gas, or includes same, you should also check out this gas forum:

Constant gas or frequently malodorous stools often indicate a bacterial imbalance or infection in the gut. A comprehensive stool analysis, such as through Great Plains Lab in Kansas (U.S.) or Doctor's Data in Illinois can diagnose such ailments. Both labs have websites. (I've heard several negative comments about Great Smokies Lab lately from reliable sources, so I hesitate to recommend them these days.)
If your issue is a matter of non-gas odor, I've heard that some folks have success using those individually foil packed antibacterial wipes a few times a day, and certainly after bowel movements. I've seen these at drug stores. I've also read about someone who very successfully used underarm stick deodorant in that region, although you mention you've already tried this. (Not an antiperspirant, as these simply block pores with aluminum or other compounds -- you'd specifically be looking for an ANTIBACTERIAL with a compound such as triclosan or equivalent.) I've seen a heavy cream deodorant called "Tussy" that might be very effective as well, although not as convenient as a stick deodorant -- you might give that a try.
I'd highly recommend you consult with your doctor about
a comprehesive stool analysis through one of the two labs mentioned above (about $300 if no insurance). Some other labs do stool analyses too, but sometimes they're not as competent or their reports don't include the all-important bacterial and yeast cultures. You'll want to see what imbalances might be present and go from there. I might suggest probiotics (refrigerated acidolphilus and bifido combo, 10-15 billion units per capsule) supplements, but there's no reason to guess and grasp at treatments if you can afford a proper lab diagnosis. This is a reply to # 558,363I have cauda equina syndrome CES and found after consultation at GF Strong rehab hospital in Vancouver, BC, that Tens wash cream is the best tool for cleaning post BM. Very cool to skin and fresh smelling.
A barrier cream is a good additional tool.

It is not an underarm problem, nor a gas problem. Just a smell that comes from there no matter how clean I am. It is bothersome because I try to mask the smell and nothing seems to hide it. I am looking for direction on what the is the best first step is. This is a reply to # 558,365I can totally relate to the embarrassment factor, and avoided seeking medical help for my candida yeast problem for a long time. Part of my diagnosis included a stool analysis, which you do in the privacy of your own home, and then mail off the small parcel to the lab. Certainly embarrassing the first time (I opted for three analyses at three different labs, a long story, but that's not necessary if you simply use a competent lab). In short, after finally getting this done, the embarrassment subsides and YOU'LL KICK YOURSELF FOR NOT DOING IT MUCH, MUCH EARLIER. After all, what's worse, temporary embarrassment at a doctor's office, or constant embarrassment in the home and workplace? More significantly, once you discuss any bowel disorder (or any other potentially embarrassing disorder) with your doctor, you'll readily notice the quick, nonchalant, and straight-faced responses he'll/she'll offer. In other words, what's embarrassing to you is just another uneventful day at the office for them handling more routine cases. After you sense the doctor's "Yeah, I've dealt with various bowel issues many times before...no big deal" nonchalance, you'll once again kick yourself for postponing due to embarrassment.
You say your hygiene in that region is fastidious. Then, by definition, the smell is emanating from your lower bowel -- it likely has nothing to do with your skin surface or outer "parts." It's likely that your gut has either an infection or bacterial imbalance which can ONLY be properly treated once clinically diagnosed. You'll continue suffering until you bite the bullet and do so. Believe it or not, poo is not supposed to smell much in a healthy individual. If your gut bacteriology were healthy, even if the smell somehow "leaked" outside you it should be a modest odor, and not the more substantial issue you've described.

Most of these labs have a physician referral service that can steer you to a physician in your area who's familiar with that lab's protocols. DON'T settle on whatever local lab your regular doctor uses, since doing so may waste your time and money with less capable cultures -- go with one of the premier gastrointestional specialty labs previously mentioned. This is a reply to # 558,365I had the same problem for awhile when I had a hernia. I had developed edema(fluid build up) between the bowel and uterus in the abdominal cavity and the lymph nodes in that region were trying to detox me and made the smell there. I solved it by soaking my bottom in an epsome salts bath twice a day and helping my lymph system detox by drinking alot of water and Seasalt , taking chlorophyllin 3 times a day with meals (be aware, this will give you many bowel movements a day) and rebounding (jumping on a mini-trampoline). The smell cleared up even before the hernia surgery.

Try washing with Benzoyl Peroxide...Anti- Acne Face Washes have this ingredient such as Clean & Clear which contains 10% Benzoyl Peroxide. This active ingredient will rid you of smelly bacteria within 2 days but keep using for 2 weeks. Wash 2 times daily and use anti-fungal powder to keep the area dry (medicated foot powder is fine). On the chance it's not a physical issue such as that, here's "Plan B" which does not involve a doctor. This plan addresses potential bacterial and/or yeast infections, dietary issues, bodily digestive insufficiencies, and bacterial imbalances. You might see results with same...chances are they'll be modest...I'd keep my expectations low if lab diagnosis isn't done and Antibiotics (if necessary) aren't taken. "Shotgun approach" most definitely describes this plan.
1. Complete a candida questionnaire:

2. Address diet, cutting back on saturated fats, caffeine, alcohol, and refined flours. GREATLY reduce all types of sugars. Consume plenty of fresh or frozen vegetables and fruits. Keep in mind that wheat, egg, and milk sensitivities/allergies in adults are not uncommon.

I would just like to share a few things ive noticed about my problem. First off, ive been constipated my entire life. Recently ive been going at least once a day. Ok this may sound gross but i need to lay all the facts out on the table. After a bowel movement it takes forever to wipe my self clean, ill no joke use an entire roll of toleit paper to get myself clean. And i also shower and scrub back there with soap and water after i go. The whole situation is very odd, it cant be normal to use so much tp to clean up, ive tried wet wipes, most tp nothing seems to work. I know the majority of people dont suffer from this problem so there must be somthing wrong with me. Also something i think may cause this is the rectum, i feel that once i pass the movement that my rectum doesnt seal up again, almost like im wiping inside my rectum or something that sounds odd but just a stab in the dark. Also this same problem may cause the oder. Gas may be escaping my rectum during the day. Also sweating induces the oder. I personal have a feeling it has more to do with a deformaty of the colon or something than any internal problem. As the first post stated i totally have the same problem about someone saying the word smells or somthing i totally freak out and think there talkinga about me, sometimes i feel like i can smell it and others i feel like i dont smell but people apear to think i do. Its very odd. my family honestly hasnt said anything about it to me so i quess they dont notice. Any advice or comments about my situation or about my idea of whats causing it plz let me know. I used to have a similar problem. When I'd "go" I'd have to use a lot of toilet paper to wipe clean. The stool, I noticed, would come out in a pasty way and with a bad smell. I'd wipe and wipe and even washing didn't help.
I did a bowel cleans with psyllium and Bentonite for a while. Then I did a juice fast for five days - along with that I did laxative tea at night and the saltwater flush in the mornings. I also cleaned up my diet a bit. I was used to eating a lot of white bread, white flour and pasta. These products can be used to make glue so you can imagine what I was doing to my insides and it's no wonder my stool was so pasty - like glue.
Now, when I use the washroom and I wipe I don't see ANYTHING at all on the toilet paper most times.
You probably need to clean yourself out. Check the bowel clense forum.

This is a reply to # 558,403yup, i've posted here b4 regarding this odor problem now 6 months later it has gotten worse..
i admitt my diet isnt the best but its better then most people i know and they do not suffer from this problem.
i also suffer from using a whole roll of TP after a movement, its annoying and disgusting, so i wet the paper b4 i wipe now. but as someone else said its like it keeps coming, and i never have normal looking movements, they are mushy and mucusy, coming out in bulk not one full movement. As a result of this i seem to be able to clear a room, i've heard it all, from " its smells like ass in here" to, something reaks like *%#&¤?§*'' to " you flat out stink" very embarassing for me aswell. so i now shower and scrub the "area" with a cloth and liquid soap after every movement. I have yet to try any of these cleanses myself because i do not have the resources to get them. Is there any way i can get a cleanse done proffesionally?
im sick of this problem and on the brink of suicide, due to the fact i have no job or social life because of it. This is a reply to # 558,703The things you described in your post are a mirror of my life. The only difference is I'm a 40 year old woman. I have tried many tings, different cleanses and nothing seems to work for me. The smell is so bad I want to work but who would possibly hire me like this. I have been to several different gastrointestinal doctors and no one has been able to find anything. I too complained of mucus like stools but the doctors have not been able to find an infection. Please let me know if you come up with anything or if any of the suggestions work for you and I will do the same.

I just wanted to text you back, because I did recently go over your posted text, about your problems and difficulties with Fecal Body Odor and wanted to see, if I could help. Apparently, as I was texting this other guy on the CureZone Forums here, he mentioned to me about, something that he himself has tried that helped curb his fecal Body Odor issues and he also mentioned in the post, that he was fecal Body Odor free for 3 yrs!! 3yrs, can you believe that!!!!!!!
