I'm trying to diagnose whether I have mold poisoning or not, and what kind of mold it could be.
I lived in an apt for 3 weeks with an awful smelling bathroom. Bldg is 100 years old and not insulated. There is a fan and window in bathroom. I can only describe the odor as extremely pungent and dirty, like "bodies". I started getting a "stuffed nose" and at first had a slight runny nose and was wheezing, esp if I laid down on the sofa near the bathroom/living room wall. Eventually I was just left with the "stuffed nose" feeling. (Probably spores.)
When the storm came I noticed a ceiling leak in a closet. It has been poorly patched before. Landlord was unresponsive. I moved out 3 weeks ago.
Unfortunately I transported mold spores on my belongings and some got in my car which has leather seats. I began the throwing out/cleaning/air purifying/HEPA vacuuming/laundry process upon getting here to the new place (which also has mold (which I can smell right away now anywhere I go!) but not as bad as the last place, also in the bathroom and in the adjoining room which I will leave empty and closed up.)
My symptoms are: pain in left calf for 10 days; pain began in the back of both ankles today (this could be from wearing not the greatest sneakers while doing all this clean-up); a SWEET PUNGENT ODOR poring out of my skin all over body and same odor when I pass gas; dizziness; not breathing as deep as usual (I have some asthma from smoking and am still smoking); jumpy at loud noises, a different more metallic odor which is sometimes sweet all throughout my nasal system down to lungs; slightly blurred vision.
When I'm in my car I get very sick and my clothes are saturated with the sweet odor as is my nasal system. Is it worth saving? I'm having it detailed with microbicides etc on Monday, $500. I'm devastated and have lost so much, and am worried about my health.
Does this sound like allergies or something else? If so, what could it be?

MoreThis is a reply to # 2,011,784Okay up until now I haven't posted on this, but I have fungal/mold issues and also have noticed that SWEETish smell coming through my pores. Sometimes it's another type smell that's kind of FLORAL or something, but I can't stand it.
So I researched scent, chemistry, etc.. and landed on ~pheromones~. Pheromones are odorous substances released/secreted in order to evoke behavior or sexua| responses.
"Pheromones are also used by some fungi, slime molds, and algae as attractants in reproduction; organisms of complementary reproductive cell types grow or move toward each other."
Fungi and algae secrete pheromones to attract sperms and induce their reproductive organs to grow... and cellular slime molds use it to gather all it's members into one place.
New research suggests that in addition to chemical signals from its own species, the yeast, called Candida albicans, also gets turned on by the so-called pheromones sent out by ~other~ species.

Day by day I'm surprised of these species'intelligence strategies. My god - we are far away! They work togheter ! its similar with the work in biofilms between bacteria.
Very interesting info! dont know if its usefull but very interesting.
One question if you know - would being expose to constant mold/fungus spores make you more suscetible to infection?
I'm living with my parents (due to crisis problem) and my father which is an alcoholic (basically hipoglicemic i guess) have these fruity smells all the time.
Plus as I wrote I'm positive to have mold in the basement and bath room. and when I'm enetring the house I feel a sudden tiredness and difficult to breath.
since 3-4 years I develop this symptom plus many and since then infections of any kind are part of my life.
what are your thoughts?

This is a reply to # 2,011,966Well Dave I'd have to say being around mold constantly would make your immune system work too much overtime, which could end up making you susceptible. Some people are more sensitive than others...
Do you think you parents are affected then? Have they the same symptoms as you? Have you done any clean-up to try and get rid of the mold? You almost need an expert to find out anything for sure... It's hard to clean what you can't see though right?

It's hard indeed but somehow we have managed. due to crisis i also lost my job and got ill from these and big stress on the job so for the moment we have less choice.
I do think my parents are affected also but they think is just the old age :):(! My mother has recurrent infections in the bowels besides parasites. I tried to convince everybody that the basement is really a problem but they think i'm too hipocondriac. I can understand that.
we are living in the first floor/ground floor in a block of flats and the neighbours on the same floor has the same infectious problem as we have. so I thought there might be a connection besides cross infestation.
I'll try and would be glad to find an expert but here in my country they dont think its a big problem ! rather is in my head that this. the same with Amalgams filling. they told me to get them out just like that - what is the problem? but i'm too weak and constaipated to do it. plus we dont have holistic dentist here...
could you recoomend a link/a site or something i can find good advice on this - fixing the mold problem?
and another question? do you think they can be bellow false walls and floor? i'm kind of novicesorry

This is a reply to # 2,012,254A good thing to use is Borax not only for cleaning up but also internally to help get rid of fungus/mold. It's also known to remove flouride and metals(from amalgams), out of your system. And it's cheap!!
There's a ton of testimony from people that have had positive results. I put just a pinch into a glass of distilled water. Or if you're uncomfortable doing that, they make boron supplements.

I'm no expert either, just learning along the way... Here's a site with more tips. There's what they call a "mold bomb"(like a fogger), I've never tried one, but it might be worth a try down in your basement especially. Perhaps get into the hidden mold in the walls and floor.

This is a reply to # 2,012,560I agree with borax to clean eliminate molds, i use it too.. but can be use to clean , don't know if its safe for drinking.Use a dehumidifier to control the humidity in your room.

This is a reply to # 2,011,784Strongly recommend investing in an ozone generator - using it in your car, your new home, bagging (such as a garbage bag) your clothing - sealing the gag around the generator. This really is about the only way to kill those spores. Saved my life.

could you tell what kind of ozone generator do you use? I mean do they have a capacity or something? how did you choose it?
how many hours it should work? all the time?
do you use it after cleaning the mold anyway?
what were your symptoms before use this?
I'm new to this domain and try to figure out some ways to solve it. Unfortunately cant move now cause have no job :(.

This is a reply to # 2,011,963I actually tried the ozone generator in my car and it seemed to work for the first few hours I drove it but all it did was kill the ODOR of the spores. They are alive more than ever only a week later. They only kill what's in the air and on surfaces. Ozone kills oxygen so anything alive can't breathe. It needs to be treated with respect as it can wreak havoc on your electronics and plastics (and you.) Read up on it. There are differing opinions and it needs to be used by someone who knows how to do it so it will a) be effective enough and b) not hurt you. I have been told not to use it in the home, at least not continuously.
I am still interested in Clara's experience however, and how it helped her. I am looking for solutions.- Re: What Kind of Mold Exposure? CLEW

This is a reply to # 2,012,096Hey I just remembered what a doctor told me would kill spores in your car and the air system... He said to turn the heater on as hot as it goes for about 15 minutes and the quick hot temperature change supposedly kills them.
Now I don't know for sure if that works, but it may be worth a try? It's also supposed to work for the air/heating system in the house, but again I don't know for sure...
Let us know if you try it.

It sounds like you are suffering from toxic black mold exposure.
I think detailing the car is a bit excessive. I would just drive with all the windows down on the freeway, and let it sit parked in the sunshine for a few days. UV light kill mold spores.
Remember when suffering from toxic black mold exposure, all your senses will be hypersensitive, and even the tiniest amount of dust will make you develop symptoms.
Smoking actually kills the mold in your lungs, but you probably know smoking is bad for other reasons- but I wonder if smokers perhaps smoke because they are exposed to mold in their lungs in the first place?
Also- do you tend to be overweight- have infections frequently and suddenly developed acne? Those could also be signs of toxic mold exposure.
Mold can also make you develop other problems- since they often co-exist with viruses, bacteria, parasites etc.
When I was exposed to toxic mold for just ONE month, I suddenly developed a cold (I never had a cold in 5 years!), fluid retention in my lungs, body aches, skin problems, tinnitus and a yeast infection.
I was given anti-biotics and an anti-fungal. I recovered quickly, but in the first two weeks after I removed myself from the mold environment, any amount of dust would bring on the symptoms again. Once I recovered, my belongings that had been exposed to toxic mold were just fine (computers, books, clothes, bags bedding etc) after cleaning and washing, except for my silk clothes that developed a black mold stain.

This is a reply to # 2,054,819i didn't know smoking kills mold in your lungs but who wants to keep smoking just to get rid of molds . Sure way is to prevent the mold problems to avoid allergies. Maintain the humidity level in your house, dehumidifier helps alleviate pain and symptoms of these kind of allergies.

This is a reply to # 2,011,784Sorry to hear about your exposure but I think I can help save your car. I've used this method on 4 separate occasions and it's worked every time.
Buy 1 gallon of bleach and 2 gallons of water, pour the water out and cut jugs in half. Get a piece of cardboard (for spillage) and put the bleach in each one of the water jugs than carefully place them on the floor board on top of the cardboard. Roll up the windows shut the doors and let the car sit from 4-6 days. If the bleach is good you'll see a film on your windshield. Roll down the windows after the 6th day and let the car air out.
If your still having problems don't give up try a different brand of bleach. I found that Clorox doesn't work but the generic brand from Walmart does.
I have sold more vehicles due to cross contamination but ever since I started using bleach to decontaminate I've been able to keep the same truck for over 2 years. Just be careful and don't spill the bleach in your car - Re: What Kind of Mold Exposure? #177123
